Former UCLA outfielder Whitney Holum just returned home to San Diego after playing professionally in Italy.

She says she knows many players on the UCLA team who were crushed by the IOC's decision.

Holum: For a lot of the girls, it's kind of the next step to go to the Olympics so it's really disheartening that it's no longer going to be there and it changes the game as far as what you work towards and what will be the highest level of competition and it's really unfortunate that it's not going to be there, but I don't think it cripples the sport as far as its following.

The International Softball Federation wants to bring softball back for the 2016 Olympics.

Holum thinks the US loss could be a good thing for their campaign .

She says it might encourage more international awareness of the sport.
