Voters Choose “Gangster” For Next One Book, One San Diego Selection

After five weeks of voting, the results are in.

lê thi diem thúy’s 2003 novel “The Gangster We Are All Looking For,” is the 2011 selection for One Book, One San Diego. The book follows the story of a Vietnamese refugee family as they settle in San Diego.

"Gangster" was selected by public online voting. This year, a record 2,338 votes were cast, and the race was close: "Gangster" beat out Luis Alberto Urrea’s “Into the Beautiful North” by only 27 votes.

The five year old One Book, One San Diego program is a collaboration between the San Diego Public Library and KPBS. The event series unites San Diego through book chats, author and scholar lectures, and film screenings that relate to the themes of a single book.

Events surrounding "Gangster" will take place next year.
