Authorities in Mexico say at least 53 are dead in Monterrey after the fire-bombing of a casino in the city.
Reports of the damage were still coming in early Friday morning. According to the major Mexico daily, Milenio, a group of men walked into the Casino Royale in the wealthy Mexican city and sprayed it with gasoline. Then, police said, they set the building on fire.
The newspaper reported that at least 35 people were still trapped inside. It said rescue workers paused in trying to free victims after noting structural damage to the bombed casino.
The method of igniting the gas is still in dispute. While some have said the killers used grenades, Reforma newspaper reported they used Molotov cocktails.
President Felipe Calderón called it an "act of terror". It’s one of the few times he has referred to terrorism in Mexico.
Police have not released any information on possible suspects. Monterrey lies about 150 miles south of the Texas border.
