Trifecta: Art, Science, Patron

Visual Art

The La Jolla Historical Society is host to a new exhibition that pairs artists with scientists, specifically honoring the endowed chairs for working biological researchers made possible by partial matches from the Jacobs family. Ten of the research scientists currently holding such chaired positions were paired with San Diego artists to create new works informed by the research and work of the scientist — specifically human existence.

There's work by Marcos Ramierez ERRE, the De La Torre Brothers, Siobhan Arnold, David Adey, Xuchi Naungayan Eggleton, Debby and Larry Kline, Mely Barragan, Christopher Puzio, Cesar and Lois Collective and Wendy Maruyama.

Details: Opens Saturday, Sept. 25, 2021 and runs through Jan. 16, 2022. Noon to 4 p.m. Wednesdays through Sundays. 780 Prospect St., La Jolla. Free.

Garden pARTy / 'In Good Company'

Music, Visual Art, Poetry, Dance

To celebrate their 21st anniversary, Art Produce is opening a new group exhibition with more than twenty artists — mostly artists who have shown work in their gallery or worked in residence at the gallery. The lineup is impressive, including artists like Bhavna Mehta, Kline Swonger, Anne Mudge, Marianela de la Hoz, Katie Ruiz, Arzu Ozkal and so many more. This exhibition will be on view from Sept. 25 through October 30, but to get a first look at it on Saturday you'll need to attend their celebration, a fundraiser "Garden pARTy." In addition to the exhibition, this (otherwise-outdoors) event will also offer musical performances from Sue Palmer Quartet, dance from Disco Riot and poetry readings from Ted Washington. It's a 21+ event, with craft food and cocktails.

"Brief note #7," a handcut paper work by Bhavna Mehta, will be on view at Art Produce beginning Sept. 25, 2021.

More visual art: The Institute of Contemporary Art San Diego officially opens its Balboa Park doors this weekend, with an exhibition of work by Gabriel Rico along with a companion installation at The Nat. I got a peek this week and it's excellent — watch for our feature tomorrow. Spoiler: there's an augmented reality coyote. Opening reception Friday, Sept. 24 from 6-9 p.m. (free for members or $10 general admission), but the museum opens to the public, and is always free, beginning Saturday.

'The Garden'

Theater

In "The Garden," playwright Charlayne Woodard focuses on a moment, at a garden gate, when an aging Black woman and her daughter (played by Woodard) reconcile after being estranged for three years. It won't be a sweet and easy reunion; these two women are fighters, and they have years of issues, secrets and history to unpack, right there at the edge of the garden. This is a world premiere for the La Jolla Playhouse, and it's co-directed by Patricia McGregor and Delicia Turner Sonnenberg. Proof of COVID vaccination or negative PCR test within 48 hours required. Masks required.

Details: Performances this weekend are Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. and a Saturday matinee at 2 p.m. The show runs through Oct. 17. 2910 La Jolla Village Dr., La Jolla. $25-47.
