Filmgoers Have Three Very Different Fests to Choose From

Well if "Devil" and the recent "Resident Evil" don't hold any appeal for you, you have three local film festivals to choose from: The Imperial Beach Film Festival September 17 and 18; the San Diego UnderSea Film Exhibition September 17 and 18 at Qualcomm Hall; and the Human Rights Watch Film Festival September 18-19 and 23- 25 at MoPA.

Kudos to IBFF founder and festival director Steve Futterman for persisting with his small but passionate film festival out in Imperial Beach. There will be an outdoor screening of "Back to the Future" out on the IB pier and tonight a collection of independent film shorts will play at 7pm at the Marina Vista Center at 1075 8th St. Futterman has been a strong supporter of locally produced films and his festival is worth checking out.

If you have a specialized interest in undersea exploration or just like to see breathtakingly beautiful films you can check out the San Diego UnderSea Film Exhibition. You can find sharks, Indonesia's reef warriors, and demons of the deep all at the state of the art Qualcomm Hall.

The most ambitious of the three festivals, and it's running over this weekend and next, is the Human Rights Watch Film Festival at the Museum of Photographic Arts in Balboa Park. The Human Rights Watch Film Festival is a traveling festival of films dedicated to promoting their mission statement of "protecting the human rights of people around the world." Their six film program features work from around the world and will include Q&A's with some of the filmmakers. If you want to see films with the potential to change lives, here's a great place to start.

So this weekend, maybe skip the mall theaters and seek out something unique.
