While the San Diego Padres were hitting home runs Monday, there was a different type of craft going on in the stands at Petco Park.
"This park I’ve always wanted to come to just because of the backdrop here," said artist Andy Brown. "I want to be up behind home plate somewhere and be able to capture the buildings and the city of San Diego."
Andy Brown is an artist who was born near London and now lives in South Korea. He is embarking on a project to paint all 30 Major League Baseball ballparks.
"To me baseball is just a game with so much depth to it," Brown said. "There are so many levels and I always feel like I’m learning something new with it and just gets deeper and deeper and deeper. There’s great history, great characters and great ballparks."
Brown has been to a handful of ballparks and said people have been supportive of his project.
"It’s really nice to see people's' belief in what I’m doing, people’s enjoyment from what I’m doing," Brown said. "It can be very young fans. I had a little girl come up to me and tell me she was an artist as well and we had a talk about art as well. All sorts of different people come and talk to me about it."
Brown hopes to paint all 30 ballparks by the end of this season. He then plans to display them all near the Baseball Hall of Fame.
"At the end of the trip I’m going to kind of finish up on the east coast and I want to take them to Cooperstown, and I want to have them in an exhibition there, the hall of fame or a gallery nearby," Brown said.
Brown is financing his own travels and hopes to recoup some of the money by selling his paintings.
