Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger said yesterday California should talk about legalizing marijuana. Today the controversy over those comments followed him to San Diego. KPBS reporter Tom Fudge has more.
Governor Schwarzenegger was in San Diego to talk about fire protection. But he got some questions about his statement that he's open to discussing the legalization of marijuana. Schwarzenegger refused to make further comments today. But San Diego county supervisor Diane Jacob, who was also on hand, told reporters that she considers pot to be a dangerous gateway drug.
"I think it's wrong to legalize marijuana," Jacob said. "It's a difference of opinion that I have. You can discuss it all you want. That's where I stand."
A spokesperson for the Drug Policy Alliance, which favors legalization, says state lawmakers must confront the "absurdity" of trying to enforce an unenforcable law. Earlier this year, the U.S. Attorney announced that federal authorities would not target people who provide medical marijuana in California. Tom Fudge, KPBS News.
