PPOs Receive Bad Grades

California Health Insurance companies are getting bad grades from consumers.

The state department of Insurance has issued the second report card for Preferred Provider Organizations, more commonly known as PPOs.

Six companies were examined, including Aetna, Anthem Blue Cross and Health Net. Ionnis Kazanis with the department of insurance said none of those companies scored the highest rating in any category.

And that goes to issues like, how quickly claims are paid out to policy holders, how long do they have to wait on the phone to get a response from somebody? Those are important issues for people.

Health Access, a consumer advocate group based in Sacramento, used the report card to criticize the PPOs, which cover almost 3 million Californians.

Anthony Wright heads the group, and issued a statement that reads, "For an industry that spent $86 million against health reform, insurers have a lot of reforming they need to do."
