It was on this day in 1963, on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial where Martin Luther King Jr. made his iconic, "I Have A Dream" speech.
It was a seminal moment in this country's history.
Hundreds of thousands of people took part in the March on Washington, forcing a spotlight on the challenges African Americans faced for civil rights. That struggle also played out here in San Diego, where, at the time, school and neighborhoods were segregated and not a single hotel allowed blacks earning the city the label "Mississippi of the West."
We hear from Leon Williams, San Diego's first black councilman and first black member elected to the county board of supervisors and civil rights leader Dr. Carrol Waymon, author of "On Being Black In San Diego - Anytown U.S.A." They reflect on the civil rights movement and San Diego.
