Steve Breen, a Pulitzer Prize-winning editorial cartoonist at U-T San Diego, is a master of political cartoons. But when he's at home with his kids, he sets politics aside and together they come up with images that are hilarious, bizarre and sometimes macabre.
A Tyrannosaurus Rex grinding its teeth on Donald Trump, Miley Cyclops, Betty White punching out a silverback gorilla and Santa Claus blowing up a Nazi with a bazooka are among the hundred cartoons and drawings that make up Breen's new book, "Unicorn Executions and Other Crazy Stuff My Kids Make Me Draw."
"For those of you who think I'm warping the brains of my progeny with such macabre and gory pieces of art, I say you're probably right," said Breen in the introduction to his book.
But Breen said he sets limits on what he will draw.
"No excessive human blood, no kids or women getting hurt, and no moral ambiguity," he said. "I think 'Santa Claus Blowing Up a Nazi with a Bazooka' fits within these parameters."
And the Breen family story may soon be made into a movie. When Breen's agent sent a comedy package to Hollywood, a studio-bidding war broke out with Universal Pictures coming out on top.
