San Diego Film Critics Give Summer Movie Recommendations GUESTS: Beth Accomando, KPBS arts reporter Yazdi Pithavala, Moviewallas film reviewer

What do you do after you vote today? Go to the movies. The summer movie season is in full swing. We have already seen avengers infinity war and the dead pool to soar at the box office. The anticipated solo a Star Wars story did not meet expectations. What else is coming to theaters the summer? Here to sort through the films big and small are KPBS film critic Beth. Welcome. And Podcast are -- welcome. We have had some big franchise films already that I mentioned. For a change of pace, let's start with something small. Beth, you love horror. You are excited about it in the horror film called hereditary. >> Yes. Small and scary. It comes from a 24 of company that distributes creepy films like the witch, killing of a Sacred dear. This is a family that is a descent into Hell. >>> Here is the trailer for hereditary. >> It is heartening to see so many strange new faces today. I know my mom would be very touched and suspicious. My mother was a very secretive and private woman. >>> Sound is one of the things that is not put to as good abuse as it could be picked this film uses sound very good. >>> I know you sometimes hesitate to see horror films. Have you seen this one? >> I have not. Like a lot of people my issue with horror is it is horrifying.. A quiet place is a good movie. So maybe there's hope for me yet. >>> Hereditary opens this Friday. Yes do you are looking forward to a indie film called sorry to bother you. >> >> This film is a dark comedy is fired by the world of comedy. >> This movie got a lot of buzz coming out of film festivals. The plot is about an African-American man who is trying to break it to telemarketing. He becomes hugely successful by making himself sounded Caucasian. And in times with racist tweets and white supremacist rallies, it sounds great. >>> Sorry to bother you opens in July. And do something a little bigger opens in July also. It is mission impossible follow. -- File out. >> I wonder, would you choose not to? The end you always feared is coming. And the blood will be on your hands. The file out of all your good intentions. >>> Are you looking forward to Tom Cruise's latest outing as Ethan Hunt. >> I did not like Tom Cruise and a lot of things but when Brad Bird did mission impossible in 2011 he found the combination which is don't let him get to Sears about himself and beat him up a lot. Ever since them I really enjoyed the mission impossible films. >>> I am looking forward to mission impossible six as well. The last few were really top. This is the last film where Tom Cruise has repeated a director. I am looking forward to it. >>> Let me start with Beth, any other big films you are looking forward to? >> I have to confess that I'm looking forward to the new Jurassic world fallen kingdom because of the dinosaurs. But the size and scale of dinosaurs on the quality of CGI for some of the films, I love dinosaurs. You put a big dinosaur on the screen you have me. I hope they eat the humans quickly. Get them out of the way. >>> What are you looking for when it comes to block this is the summer? >> I look forward to the dinosaurs as well. One I am looking forward to is the incredible stew. The original incredible set the bar at the peak of Pixar's reign in the animated world. It was a movie fighting against mediocrity. I want to see how the SQL addresses that. >>> As we all know not all summer blockbusters are good. Are there any you are dreading? >>> Yes. I am not looking forward to a oceans eight. I did not like any of the oceans films except for when Frank Sinatra did it even that one was not great. This one is a female version. They just gender swap the story. I guess they could not find 11 women they had to settle for eight. Right off the bat we start off bad. >>> What are you dreading this summer? >>, Beth it's not that bad. The one I dread is equalizer to on the top of the list of sequels nobody asked for. >>> It was a remake no one asked for. >> The first one was not very good know we have a second. >>> This summer also hold serious fair with Spike Lee returning with black Lansman. What you think about this one ? >> this is a movie that got great reception at the film festival. Spike Lee is overdue. In a story like this, it is based on the real-life story of a man in the 70s and African-American who was able to infiltrate and become a Ku Klux Klan member. For story like that, you need somebody with boiling righteous indignation giving that kind of treatment to the material. I think it will be fun. Adam driver, Denzil Washington son is in it. >>> You have good host with this in as well? >>> It got a six minute standing ovation at con. Spike Lee is brilliant. He has had some ups and downs. He can make some intense fired up films. Based on the trailer, it looks like it will have a touch of humor. Jordan Peele who did get out is a producer. Interesting mix of people. >>> Finally, any wildcards the summer ? something unexpected, Beth? >> We just talked about dinosaurs. I am going with Meg. It is not a girl's name. It refers to a giant prehistoric shark that Jason Statham has to go after. >>> Sounds like if it's prehistoric and you put on the screen that's your movie. >>> I am looking forward to the latest movie from -- I think he is the most humanist filmmakers right now. His new movie is a change of pace. It is like a mystery drama. I am looking forward to that one. >>> It is called the third murder. I want to thank you both. We will see you at the movies. I've been speaking with Beth and --. Thank you very much. >>> Thank you. >>> Thank you.

Films like Avengers: Infinity War and Deadpool 2 have soared at the box office just ahead of the summer movie season, but there are still a lot of films to come both big and small.

Indie flicks like "Hereditary" and "A Quiet Place" are sure to satisfy horror fans, while blockbusters Incredibles 2 and Mission: Impossible - Fallout will likely resonate with larger audiences.

KPBS arts reporter and film critic Beth Accomando and Yazdi Pithavala, a film reviewer from Moviewallas, share their top recommendations and what movies to avoid this summer Tuesday on Midday Edition.
