When it comes to race and ethnicity, you may notice many news organizations are changing the way they write and talk about it. That’s because the Associated Press has come out with new guidance on how we label people and issues of identity.
Doris Truong directs training and diversity at the Poynter Institute, a non-profit that trains journalists from around the world.
She said because many newsrooms don't have the capacity to create their own style guides and rely on the AP, these changes will resonate across the U.S.
"There are a lot of different issues that are nuanced in today's news and it gives journalists tools to talk about them in a specific way," Truong said.
The new changes can be found in the 2019 edition of the AP Stylebook expected to be released in June.
Truong joins Midday Edition to talk about the new changes and why they were made.
