The First Living Medal of Honor Winner Since Vietnam War

Today at the White House, President Barack Obama awards Staff Sgt. Salvatore Giunta with the Medal of Honor, making Giunta the first living recipient of this top military honor since the Vietnam War. The Medal of Honor is given out for extreme acts of bravery in the face of almost certain death. Giunta, who I am proud to say comes from my home state of Iowa, earned the medal for repeatedly running into enemy fire to save American lives and rescue a fellow soldier during a Taliban ambush on a remote hilltop in eastern Afghanistan's Korengal Valley on October 25, 2007.
