Camp Pendleton Marines Help Devastated Island in Japan

Over the past few weeks, Home Post has covered the tremendous job the San Diego-based USS Ronald Reagan has done providing much-needed humanitarian relief to the multitude of Japanese affected by the March 11 earthquake and tsunami. Now, Camp Pendleton Marines are doing their part to improve the lives of those touched by tragedy in Japan.

Television station NBC San Diego reports that Marines from Camp Pendleton's 31st Expeditionary Unit were the first foreigners to reach the island of Oshima and provide the villagers there with humanitarian supplies. According to NBC San Diego, the island is remote and before the quake could only be reached by ferries - ferries which were all destroyed in the tsunami.

31st MEU commanding officer Col. Andrew MacMannis told NBC San Diego his troops will help clear the island's port so ferries can once again serve Oshima:
