The young daughters of Sgt. Manny Levi Loggins Jr. were with him in the family car when an Orange County Sheriff's deputy shot him during a traffic stop. The San Clemente Times reports Loggins' two girls, ages 14 and 9, were in the backseat of his SUV when the vehicle was seen speeding near San Clemente High School by the deputy last Tuesday morning at approximately 4:45 a.m.
According to Orange County Sheriff's Department spokesman Jim Amormino, Loggins' vehicle crashed through a closed gate on campus and sped into the school's parking lot. Amormino told the SC Times Loggins left his vehicle and ignored verbal commands by the deputy:
"Loggins came back toward vehicle. That's when the deputy felt threatened."
The Marine Corps Times reports the 31-year-old Loggins was a transportation management specialist with Camp Pendleton's Headquarters and Support Battalion. Pendleton spokesman Capt. Barry Edwards said in a statement that Loggins had never been on deployment in Iraq or Afghanistan.
