The San Diego-based USS Makin Island was in San Francisco last week for that city's Fleet Week. While there, several members of the crew took part in a clean-up of the infamous Alcatraz prison.
The crew members who helped tidy up Alcatraz are part of a group called Coalition of Sailors Against Destructive Decision Making (CSADD).
CSADD member Master-at-Arms 2nd Class Cameron Havard explained why his group took time out to help preserve the historic site of Alcatraz Island:
"This is what we do. This was a day to do something constructive with our time, instead of doing something destructive while we are in San Francisco."
Makin CSADD members teamed up with Marines, community volunteers, and park maintenance employees to get the national landmark in shipshape condition.
The USS Makin Island returned to San Diego from a seven-month deployment in June.
