The USS Kearsarge and the USS San Antonio are now sitting off the coast of Egypt, according to Marine Corps commandant Gen. James Amos, “because we don’t know what’s going to happen."
Stars and Stripes quoted Amos as saying the two Virginia-based amphibious assault ships “moved up into the Red Sea and parked off of Egypt" as a precaution in case a quick response is needed:
“That’s the flexibility that in a response to a crisis we have to have.”
Important note - it's not unusual for the Navy to send its ships to be near countries where Americans may be in danger due to political turmoil, according to Reuters.
More protests are planned today in Egypt, reports USA Today. The Muslim Brotherhood and backers of overthrown President Mohammed Morsi are expected to demonstrate in favor of returning Morsi to his former post.
