A frontrunner is emerging in the race to be San Diego’s next City Council President. Councilman Tony Young appears likely to win the position.

The President sets the council docket, deciding which issues will be heard and when. He also selects the chairs for the council committees.

Young, who represents the city's fourth district, appears likely to replace current council president Ben Hueso, who’s headed to Sacramento.

Young is a Democrat but is viewed as a moderate council member. He has the support of labor groups, and the council’s two Republicans, including councilman Kevin Faulconer.

“I think he’s a very deliberative council member. He’s not one that’s always standing up, shouting about things every day. But he cares a lot about his district. He cares a lot about the city of San Diego,” Faulconer said.

The council will choose its next president in December. Five votes are needed to win the election.
