A new and controversial California law that would crack down on a therapy aimed at turning gay people straight has sparked two conflicting rulings by two different federal judges.
Democratic State Senator Ted Lieu’s measure would ban that technique from being used on minors and would take effect January 1st.
One judge ruled the law does not infringe on free speech. Another issued a preliminary injunction, saying it would. But Lieu said the second ruling was narrowly tailored to its impact on the three plaintiffs.
“So the net effect of this is, on January 1st, SB 1172, which bans gay conversion therapy for minors, will go into effect in California – except for three people," said Lieu.
The attorney for the plaintiffs in the second case plans to appeal that decision – hoping to block the law’s implementation in the new year.
