Almost a quarter of a million people took to San Diego beaches over the Memorial Day weekend despite cool temperatures and overcast skies, according to lifeguards.
The crowds at beaches on Saturday, Sunday and Monday in the city of San Diego were estimated at a total of 220,100, San Diego Fire Rescue Department spokesman Lee Swanson said in a statement.
There were 77 rescues by lifeguards over the three days and 104 medical aid responses.
Lifeguards performed 2,654 so-called preventative acts over the weekend, such as telling swimmers to stay out of surfing areas and warning beachgoers of hazardous conditions, according to Swanson.
The beaches got progressively busier as the weekend wore on. There were 58,300 people estimated on Saturday, 70,500 on Sunday, and Monday was the busiest with an estimated crowd of 91,300.
