  • Join us for an intimate evening, "Music & Masters: Classical-era Vienna and the Fortepiano." Fortepianist Daniel Adam Maltz and soprano Jennifer Ellis Kampani present a rare experience of the music of Mozart, Haydn, and Beethoven, performed on the predecessor to the modern piano. This historically informed program recreates the intimate sound world of Classical-era Vienna, where music was written for smaller spaces and lighter instruments than today’s concert halls and modern pianos. About the Artists: Vienna-based fortepianist Daniel Adam Maltz specializes in historically informed performance. Called “the foremost performer in the world of the fortepiano” (Aspen Daily News), he has been praised for imbuing “[Beethoven’s] tenderness, longing, and frustration into the very notes” (Orlando Sentinel), for “lavish but tasteful” playing (Classical Sonoma), and as “a privilege to hear” (Marblehead Current). He studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London and at the University for Music and Performing Arts in Vienna, and performs exclusively on historic Viennese fortepianos. GRAMMY-nominated soprano Jennifer Ellis Kampani is known for her expressive interpretations of early repertoire. She has appeared at Carnegie Hall and performed with leading ensembles including American Bach Soloists, Apollo’s Fire, Opera Lafayette, and Portland Baroque Orchestra. She lives in Los Angeles and teaches at USC. The Timken Museum of Art on Facebook / Instagram

  • Not many people get to realize their early dreams. Dave Nachmanoff has toured the world, both on his own, and as the guitarist and opening act for Al Stewart (“Year of the Cat”, “Time Passages”), at venues as far ranging as the Royal Albert Hall in London, to The Birchmere in Alexandria, Virginia. From performing with folk legend Elizabeth “Libba” Cotten at the age of nine, to playing in a rock band with his two brothers, Dave went on to earn a PhD in Philosophy at UC Davis and slowly built a grassroots following touring all over the world. In addition, he writes and records custom songs for clients and uses his recording studio to produce other artists. For this special show, he will be joined by Mike Lindauer on bass and vocals and Nick Carvajal on drums and vocals. Local musician, Omar Musisko, will be opening for Dave Nachmanoff. Two-time San Diego Music Award nominee (with The Peripherals and The Spiritual Motels) Omar Musisko crafts genre-bending, eclectic indie-folk music that weaves vulnerability and dark humor into poetic songs that search for beauty in the hurt. • Presented by Pacific Arts Movement, producers of the San Diego Asian Film Festival. CINEMATHEK is a year-round screening series presented by Pacific Arts Movement (Pac Arts) and Digital Gym Cinema (DGC), launching in June 2025. Inspired by Pac Arts’ early Film Forums, CINEMATHEK offers members and the public year-round access to curated screenings of classic, cult, and newly restored Asian and Asian American films. Hosted at Digital Gym Cinema, CINEMATHEK strengthens community ties, builds new audiences, and celebrates the best of Asian cinema in one of San Diego’s last remaining venues for independent and international films. Like the Royal Theater in "The Last Picture Show" and the title movie house in "Cinema Paradiso," the Fu-Ho is shutting down for good. The Fu-Ho’s valedictory screening is King Hu’s 1967 wuxia epic "Dragon Inn," playing to a motley smattering of spectators. The standard grievances persist: patrons snack noisily and remove their shoes, treating this temple of cinema like their living room. The sense that moviegoing as a communal experience is slipping away takes on a powerful and painful resonance. Yet Tsai Ming-liang’s "Goodbye, Dragon Inn" is too multifaceted to collapse into a simple valentine to the age of pre-VOD cinephilia. A minimalist where King Hu was a maximalist, preferring long, static shots and sparse use of dialogue, Tsai rises to the narrative challenges he sets for himself and offers the slyest, most delicate of character arcs (the manager, a woman with an iron brace on her leg, embarks on a torturous odyssey to deliver food to the projectionist, played by Lee Kang-sheng). By the time the possibility arises that the theater is haunted, we’ve already identified it as a space outside of time—indeed, two stars of Hu’s original opus, Miao Tien and Shih Chun, watch their younger selves with tears in their eyes, past and present commingling harmoniously and poignantly.
