  • Join us for a tour of the newly opened Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego (MCASD) in La Jolla that features the addition of 46,400 square feet of new space for exhibits; and renovations of 28,000 square feet of existing space, including newly designed galleries and a new entrance. The galleries showcase special exhibits and MCASD's permanent contemporary collection, with vertical windows, high ceilings, and skylights to enhance the art and the spectacular views of the beautiful La Jolla coast. Participants also will want to visit the Museum’s Art Park and Sculpture Garden. The Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego’s full collection includes approximately 5,600 works of art. Of those, there are approximately 350 works on display in La Jolla and the majority on display downtown, as part of 17-20 exhibitions. The La Jolla works were mostly created after 1960 and represent a variety of media and genres: painting, sculpture, video, installation and drawings. Some of the contemporary artists featured at the La Jolla location include: Andy Warhol, Mark Roscoe, Ellsworth Kelly and sculptor Marion Hassinger. A few pieces of the works of artist Niki de Saint Phalle are also included in the permanent collection.   • ArtWalk Carlsbad returns for its third year to the historic North County community on Saturday, September 24 and Sunday, September 25. Attendees can explore different facets of art from local, regional and international professional artists while enjoying street food, wine and beer, live entertainment, and the surrounding breathtaking views. The two-day, free festival will take place on Armada Drive, overlooking the shimmering ocean above the beautiful Carlsbad Flower Fields. Locals and visitors will peruse the art oasis featuring a wide array of artistic mediums including painting, sculpture, glasswork, fine jewelry, photography, and more. Guests of all ages are welcome to enjoy the interactive art experiences and KidsWalk, a family-friendly interactive art area. In addition to the abundance of artwork, ArtWalk Carlsbad will feature live entertainment from local bands and musicians, a beer and wine pavilion and bites from street food vendors highlighting different cuisines. The festival will run from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m. on Saturday, September 24, and 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Sunday, September 25. The event is open to all ages and an abundance of free parking is located near the festival. Each of ArtWalk San Diego’s three annual festivals support their non-profit partner, ArtReach San Diego, a nonprofit organization aimed at increasing equity in visual arts education in K-8 schools throughout San Diego County by delivering workshops to schools that have no other resources for art.
