  • The San Diego Alpha Foundation and Zeta Sigma Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. is pleased to announce the forty second (42nd) annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Parade! The 2024 edition of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Parade is to be held Rain-or-Shine, on Sunday, Jan. 14, 2024 beginning at 10 a.m. It is the highlight of the Martin Luther King San Diego Weekend, which includes a 5k walk/fun run and festival! The Parade route is along the foot of downtown, along the waterfront. It begins at Ash Street and N. Harbor Drive. The parade will proceed south on N. Harbor Drive, east on Broadway, then south on Pacific Highway toward Seaport Village where it will end/disband. (The judges’ booth/stage will be across from the Wyndham Bayside Hotel/Segway Tours office.) The announcers will be Alani Letang of Fox 5 San Diego, and Keristen Holmes of CBS 8.   • From the organizers: San Diego Dance Theater annually seeks newly emerging dancemakers to participate in the Emerging Choreographers Showcase & Awards, a competition that awards three prizes to participants: Best Overall Choreography, Best Dancer, and Audience Favorite. This exhilarating show is a beloved staple in San Diego, with its main purpose being to bring exposure and support to growing choreographers in the community. About the showcase and awards: San Diego Dance Theater is thrilled to present the annual Emerging Choreographer's Showcase & Awards! The event formerly known as Young Choreographer's Showcase & Prize has evolved to reflect the agelessness of dance and support the pursuit of growth at any point in life. There is no longer a maximum age limit for eligibility, and we hope to see even more incredible dancing and dance-making! Finalists will compete for three prizes, as voted on by YOU, the audience, and the panel of judges. Grand prize is $1000 and a night in Live Arts Fest 2024 awarded to "Best Overall." "Best Dancer" and "Audience Favorite" both receive a $500 prize, with "Best Dancer" also receiving an invitation to dance at a future SDDT event.
