Prog-Rock Powerhouse Stick Men Return to San Diego with Chapman Stick Virtuoso Tom Griesgraber Nearly two years since their last San Diego performance, Stick Men — the progressive rock supergroup featuring Tony Levin, Pat Mastelotto, and Markus Reuter — return to the Bornemann Theater in San Marcos. This marks a special homecoming of sorts, as Mastelotto and Reuter were the first national touring act to perform at the Bornemann’s Grand Opening in May 2024, along with Trey Gunn as part of their band TU-NER. Formed in 2007, Stick Men is known for their adventurous sound built around electric touch-style instruments like the Chapman Stick and the self-designed U8 guitar. Levin (Peter Gabriel, King Crimson) anchors the trio with his mastery of the Chapman Stick, an instrument that simultaneously covers both bass and melody. Mastelotto brings an innovative approach to percussion, blending acoustic drums with an electronic setup, while Reuter adds layers of depth and texture with his custom instrument. Combined, the band’s members have contributed to records selling over 100 million copies worldwide. Opening the night is renowned Chapman Stick player Tom Griesgraber, whose genre-blending performances often include guitar Theremin and collaborations with artists from the California Guitar Trio to RYMO featuring Slightly Stoopid’s drummer Ryan Moran. The VAPA Foundation, dedicated to enhancing access to arts education for San Diego students in grades K through 12, is thrilled to announce its annual Beyond Brilliance Gala, an extraordinary celebration that highlights the exceptional talents of young, gifted performing artists. Now in its sixth year, the event will take place at a stunning new venue, the state-of-the-art Epstein Family Amphitheater. This venue will provide the perfect setting for a captivating showcase of performances across a variety of artistic mediums, including dance, musical theater, mariachi, and a full award-winning student orchestra. Holocaust survivor Gerald Szames to be interviewed by Sandra Scheller, the creator and curator of the "Remember Us The Holocaust" exhibit. On March 11, Lou Pechi, a Holocaust survivor and author, will be speaking in the Library at 6 p.m. His talk will focus on his childhood experiences, including being sent away from his parents to live with a Catholic family during the war. Born in the Croatian city of Zagreb, Louis “Lubo” Pechi was seven years old when the Germans invaded Yugoslavia. In response to the mounting anti-Semitic repression and strict laws prohibiting Jews from traveling, the Pechis converted to Catholicism and changed their identities in the hope of finding safety in Italy. While the Pechi family managed to escape to Rome, a series of unexpected events followed, marking a lengthy journey of survival for Lubo. Decades later, he began the arduous process of recovering the memories of his hidden life by writing his memoir "I Am Lubo: A Child Survivor from Yugoslavia." He was baptized Catholic, which saved him until he was eventually turned in. He was sent to prison, where he spent two days—six hours before the train that would have taken him to Auschwitz departed.
