  • Learn to Knit this Season!Saturdays, May 10, 17, 24, 9 a.m. - 11 a.m.In this workshop series students will knit a cowl, work with natural yarns and acquire a lifelong skill. Students will learn knitting basics including casting on, the knit and purl stitches, casting off, simple sewing and finishing techniques. No experience necessary. Ages 14+ welcome. Students bring knitting needles, size 15 (10mm) (wood or bamboo recommended); bulky/chunky yarn, about 138 yds (wool or wool blend recommended), and a crochet hook, any size (for picking up dropped stitches).For ideas for purchasing yarn, a great local yarn store, Apricot Yarn, offers super bulky Malabrigo Yarn ‘Rasta’ that works well for this class.   • Front Street Productions presents the Tijuana-based Chimæra Ensemble. Chimæra is a new, semi-professional orchestra of talented instrumentalists who are passionate about making music together.
They will share a program of well known pieces from classical repertoire along with music by Latin American composers not typically included in the Western classical canon.   • San Diego farmers and farms are the focus of "California Grown, Plein Air" exhibition at the Bonita Museum & Cultural Center May 17 – June 20, 2025.In the Spring of 2025, plein air painters from around San Diego County painted at farms, documenting the diverse types of farms in the region. Juror Katie Stokes, the editor of Edible San Diego Magazine, will select her favorite artworks during the reception, Saturday May 17 from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m."Edible San Diego magazine has been celebrating local food in farms and gardens for 17 years. Our region's many beautiful valleys, hills, creeks, rich history and diverse plant and animal life make it a haven to grow food or enjoy the harvests of farmers, ranchers and fishers.   • World Bee Day is held in recognition of the role bees play in sustaining a healthy ecosystem, ensuring our food supply and ultimately the future of humanity. The purpose of our event is to raise awareness of the vital importance of bees and all pollinators, the threats they face and actions every individual can take to protect them.The JFGM will be partnering with other Balboa Park and community organizations including the Air and Space Museum, Natural History Museum, SD Beekeeping Society, SD Youth Symphony, CA Native Plant Society, Hives for Heroes and other groups to showcase bees through exhibits, music, interactive demonstrations, microscopic observations, art and educational hands-on activities. This fun and purposeful community event will be held on Sunday, May 18, 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. in the Upper Garden area.
