A new larger-than-life mural honoring the humanity of farmworkers and their allies will be unveiled at a free, family-friendly celebration at Chicano Park: Sunday June 25 at 1 p.m. El Cortito Mural, which commemorates the historic California Supreme Court ruling that dramatically improved working conditions for California farmworkers by banning the short-handled hoe -- known as El Brazo del Diablo, The Devil's Arm -- will be introduced to the community on Sunday. Many know el cortito as a cruel harvesting tool that forced farmworkers to stoop over for hours on end in the searing sun, imposing debilitating back and spinal deformities on generations of laborers. The event features live music, dance performances by Azteca Kuauhkoatl, huelga songs and inspiring historical accounts from those whose work to recognize the humanity of California's farmworkers is memorialized in the mural. Come for the unveiling ceremony; please stay and enjoy a kaleidoscope of larger-than life murals at Chicano Park -- a national historical landmark -- and learn of their historical significance.
