The year: 1945 The place: San Diego County’s now-demised Carlsbad Mineral Springs Hotel & Spa The result: Theatre magic! The lives of five unforgettable guests cross paths one weekend at the Grand Hotel. Who are these strangers? - A despondent opera diva - A disgraced baron turned jewel thief - An ambitious stenographer - A shell-shocked Army pilot - A greedy business tycoon Meanwhile, the ever-present concierge is the thread which weaves all the characters together as narrator. • Announcing the September Cinballera Salon - "Lady of the Ring" and Songs of Middle Earth! "Lady of the Ring" returns, this time at the Villa Montezuma. Cinballera's second-ever show was "Lady of the Ring: A Chamber Ballopera," which was inspired by J. R. R. Tolkien's three-volume masterpiece "Lord of the Rings." The vocal portion of this show was an original chamber opera featuring an assortment of art songs in English and Elvish to tell the story of how a simple group of hobbits saved Middle Earth from the One Ring. The centerpiece of the music is a song cycle "The Road Goes Ever On," which Tolkien himself authorized and co-wrote with composer Donald Swann. Now, we're bringing that one-hour chamber opera out of the archives to present it at the Cinballera Salon. We've moved the monthly Salon from the usual third Monday to the fourth Monday, September 22, which is Hobbit Day in honor of Frodo and Bilbo Baggins's shared birthday. The epic saga is condensed to the simplest tale, featuring only the characters of Frodo Baggins, Samwise Gamgee, Gollum, Bilbo Baggins, who serves as narrator, and Lady Sauron, the Lady of the Ring. The other portion of the Salon will feature assorted songs and arias which convey the mood of Middle Earth, including Wagner excerpts, folk songs, and outtakes from the original "Lady of the Ring" song list. This intimate event is sure to sell out quickly, so we're selling tickets in advance. Make your reservations now so you won't miss out on "Lady of the Ring!" All the proceeds support the two non-profit organizations, Cinballera and Friends of the Villa Montezuma, and pay the performers. Not all those who wander are lost, so wander to the Villa Montezuma on Hobbit Day for "Lady of the Ring" and other Songs of Middle Earth! Cinballera Entertainment on Facebook / Instagram
