From the KPBS weekend arts preview: Moondaddy performs a pre-release show at Soda Bar, alongside other acts Jackie Medoza and more. Moondaddy is helmed by multi-instrumentalist Cara Potiker, and the upcoming album "Poet Lies" will come out Aug. 18 on the Volar Records label. Indie dream pop artist moondaddy first began in singer/songwriter Cara Potiker’s San Diego bedroom, dreamt up as a pressure valve for the existential dread of the 2020 lockdown. During that time Potiker began diving deep into analog audio, spending hours in her bedroom songwriting and making physical demo tapes.After pairing with Texas-based producer El Cosmophonico (real name Manuel Calderon), Potiker began transforming those demo tapes into expansive reverb-soaked odysseys with her forthcoming debut album, Poet Lies. From ArtPower at UC San Diego: Atamira Dance Company is the leading international creator of contemporary dance and performance. Based in Aotearoa, New Zealand, a remote and wild landscape where indigenous Māori stories are a powerful voice in the arts locally and, increasingly, internationally, Atamira is integral to the contemporary Māori performing arts conversation and movement. The company performs it’s powerful new full-length dance work Te Wheke, which brings together Aotearoa’s leading names in contemporary dance. The piece explores the dimensionsof human experience symbolised by the eight tentacles of the Te Wheke—the Octopus, a powerful guardian on this journey from past into the future. However, if we use our voices to mobilize support for climate justice at an international and national level, ecocide can be added to the list of international crimes, and policy can be implemented at the federal and state levels, which will act as a powerful brake on harmful extractive practices and a much-needed incentive for strategic change and innovation.

"Brainstorms" Directed by Aron Meinhardt, Julie Pacino “Brainstorms” is an experiential look inside the mind of Brian, a veteran who has sustained a traumatic brain injury (TBI) during combat. "Touch" Directed by Andrew Brame In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, a young woman with an autoimmune condition that makes her particularly vulnerable to disease is torn between preserving her own safety and her need for human contact. "The Soldier" Directed by Devin O’Guinn When a homeless veteran receives news of his former wife dying, he embarks on a journey to reunite with his daughter while experiencing his PTSD episodes in the process. "Where to?" Directed by Brian Thompson As Kabul falls to the Taliban, Brett Chapman, an Afghanistan combat veteran turned rideshare driver, struggles to connect with his employer and passengers. "Return to Remembrance" Directed by John Marrs A soldier searches the West for his family after the Civil War. What he finds is not what he expected. The festival is organized by KPBS in partnership with the Film Consortium San Diego to present the Local Film Showcase.
