  • EDITOR’S NOTE: San Diego District Attorney Summer Stephan is disputing the story KPBS reported on racial disparities in special charges that can lead to life without parole. KPBS’s story relied on a data analysis from a researcher who attributed cases to DAs based on disposition date. The DA’s office provided an analysis that attributed cases to DAs based on filing date. It showed no racial disparity in making these special charges against Black and white defendants when looking only at multiple murder cases during DA Stephan’s tenure. KPBS has clarified the story to include more detail about the analysis and the data it used. Go to the story to learn more. First, in a new KPBS series, we talk with a local mom who shares how she makes ends meet in San Diego County. Then, the second part of a series on Black defendants having a higher likelihood of facing charges that could lead to life without parole than their counterparts. . We also tell you details around California psychiatric hospitals having a new deadline to adjust to new staffing rules. Also, Olympic soccer is coming to San Diego! Plus, our Cinema Junkie offers a creative alternative to Super Bowl Sunday.

  • Join us for the annual Doctoral Research Colloquium on Friday, March 6! The colloquium features talks by UCSD Visual Arts PhD students along with a keynote lecture by a speaker who has influenced their practice, Professor Gerardo Aldana, from UC Santa Barbara. The Colloquium will be followed by a Reception and Screening for the collaborative exhibition in SME Gallery. Gerardo Aldana is a professor of Chicana/o Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara. His research takes a history of science and indigenous studies approach to exploring Mayan hieroglyphic history, with a focus on astronomy. Throughout his research, for example in The Apotheosis of Janaab Pakal: Science, History and Religion at Classic Maya Palenque and Calculating Brilliance: an intellectual history of Mayan Astronomy at Chich’en Itza, he investigates cases of historically contingent invention and discovery within indigenous Mayan scientific practice. More recently, his research has led to further exploration of what he refers to as “oracular science” within ancient Mesoamerican astronomical practice. At the core of this exploration is a 14th century indigenous Mayan hieroglyphic manuscript comprising primarily divination almanacs and astronomical tables. • "A Must See!" – BroadwayWorld “The show is so moving it suspends us in belief she is still with us” – DC Theater Arts Written by multiple-Tony Award®-winning playwright Rupert Holmes Starring Michelle Azar as Ruth Bader Ginsburg Directed by: Laley Lippard Over the course of ninety fascinating and often funny minutes, the play presents an intimate portrayal of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, a true American original. Holmes invites the audience into the intimacy of RGB’s life and her many trials: Losing her mother the day before she graduated as valedictorian of her Brooklyn high school, being one of only nine young women studying law at Harvard while also raising a daughter and helping her husband battle cancer, fighting for women's rights in the nineteen-seventies before condescending all-male courts...and taking courageous stands for human rights as a voice of reason amid a splintering and increasingly politicized Supreme Court. David Taylor of Dan’s Paper said of this production, “…a powerful teaching tool and an intellectually enriching production for the whole family.” “A uniquely intimate experience that’s absolutely worth exploring”, he continued. An evening with a great and compassionate icon of straight-thinking American justice emerges - an RBG who is not only “notorious” but victorious as she takes a stand for ordinary people facing the many challenges of a changing world. Holmes brilliantly captures RBG’s compelling life leaving no wonder why she became a cross-generational role model inspiring tens of millions of Americans and a world-wide following.
