The public is invited to meet San Diego scientists leading groundbreaking biomedical research when Scripps Research hosts its second annual Discovery Day at the Fleet Science Center in Balboa Park. With more than a dozen hands-on science activity stations led by over 50 graduate students and scientists from different Scripps Research laboratories, visitors will see amazing demonstrations and explore topics ranging from chemistry, neuroscience, viruses and vaccines, aging research, cancer biology, the gut microbiome, and more. Science enthusiasts of all ages will find fun and engaging activities at Scripps Research Discovery Day, from building candy DNA models and tasting ice cream made using liquid nitrogen, to peering at bacteria and tiny worms through microscopes, entering the tiny universe of viruses with virtual reality goggles, and learning about the latest research into new medicines that may soon provide treatments for disease. Following on the success of the first Scripps Research Discovery Day in November 2024, which was held in part to celebrate the non-profit research institute’s 100th birthday, Scripps Research is excited to return to the Fleet and connect again with members of the community for insightful conversations and shared moments of wonder. The Old Globe premieres of "Huzzah!" next week, a new musical that combines song, dance and swordplay.

The San Diego Arab Film Festival presents the classic Iranian film "The Survivor" directed by Seifollah Dad. The film is set in Haifa and illustrates the experiences of Palestinians under Israeli occupation. It is based on the Ghassan Kanafani novel "Returning to Haifa." Starring Jamal Soliman, Alaa El Din Koksh and Salma Al-Masri, this historical drama tells the story of a Palestinian grandmother who returns to Haifa to find out what happened to her grandson who was separated from his parents when they were forced to leave their home when Israel took control of Haifa. The screening will take place at 7 p.m., October 18, at the Museum of Photographic Arts at the San Diego Museum of Art in Balboa Park. A traditional Palestinian dinner (served cafeteria style) will be available for purchase. Options include Musakan (baked chicken with salted onions, olive oil and sumac) and Mujadara (vegetarian dish of lentils and rice with caramelized onions and plain yogurt). "Travelogue: Celebrating San Diego's Multiculturalism" featuring: Ashwin Salvi & Lia Steiner Rodriguez +Special Musical Performance by: Rafael Pondé SDWAC has partnered with the International Cottages at Balboa Park's House of Pacific Relations, the United Nations Association of San Diego, the San Diego International Sister Cities Association, and the San Diego Diplomacy Council to create a fun and interactive way to explore the International Cottages and to celebrate San Diego's unique history of multiculturalism! How does travel shape our world perspectives? This unique program will take you on a visual tour around the world with special guest speakers Ashwin Salvi and Lia Steiner Rodriguez, who will inspire us with stories of their own travel and adventures. Upon checking in for the presentations, all pre-registered lecture attendees will receive a program "passport" upon arrival. Immediately following the presentations, attendees will be invited to visit the participating Cottages to learn more about each country and will receive a "passport stamp" in their program. Participation is free, pre-registration is required. If you receive a stamp from each participating cottage you can turn that in to receive an entry to a raffle for a travel-related prize - a $500 airfare gift card!
