This walking tour focuses on the Presidio de San Diego, buried underground below the Serra Museum. Learn about the historical significance of this site going back to deep time, how the unique river and marine environment attracted people to the site since time immemorial. Discover how archaeologists and historians have been able to understand what buildings and structures were there, and reconstruct what they may have looked like. Afterwards, browse around the new exhibition inside the Serra Museum. Hear from Kumeyaay people today, the people that lived along the river’s edge since time immemorial, as well as the stories of people that came to settle the area, and why the Presidio continues to be a significant site. In this first beginner sewing class students will learn how to thread a sewing machine, wind a bobbin, sew a straight stitch and pivot a corner. We will construct a pillow case together. You will also learn some very basic info about fabrics. If time allows for each student you will also learn how to finish your raw edges of the fabric using a zigzag stitch. You will leave class with a finished pillowcase. All materials are included. It’s best to learn on your own sewing machine, but you may also borrow one of ours. Please note, if bringing your own sewing machine it is very important to make sure it is fully functional. You will need all the cords, the manual, the presser foot, at least 1 bobbin and the bobbin case. Beverly Thorn, a psychologist and certified End-Of-Life Doula will discuss her new book, "Before I Lose My Own Mind: Navigating Life as a Dementia Caregiver," telling her own personal story of caring for her husband with dementia, from the lens of a psychologist and death doula. The book is aimed at caring for the caregiver, who often gets overlooked in terms of their own care needs. Knowledge about the disorder provides a coping base, and planning and ongoing conversation provides the glue to hold the caregiver together during this long trajectory. The crisis of a dementia diagnosis is sobering, but also an opportunity. Since dementia is not an all or nothing thing, there is time before one loses decisional capacity to consider and talk about their life values, healthcare and dementia care preferences along the dementia trajectory, and their end-of-life wishes. Planning and communication are key in a society where no one wants to talk about dementia or death. Loved ones and potential caregivers also need to be in the know so that they can make life-altering decisions once the person with dementia is no longer able to do so. This class is a continuation of the Family and Beginner Sewing 102. In this next series you will learn how to sew a zippered pouch with a lining from beginning to end. You will learn to install a zipper, add lining and construct a pouch. You will apply the skills you learned in series 101 and 102 to this class to help you with all the finished touches of your pouch.
