Mission Valley invites the community to experience “Something Wicked” – a family-friendly celebration of the highly anticipated premiere of “Wicked: For Good!” taking place Friday, November 21, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the AMC Court. Guests can enjoy photo moments with Elphaba and Glinda and a live performance by Trinity Theatre Company, then stop by the Trinity Theatre booth to meet the talented cast and learn about upcoming shows. Music by DJ Sass and whimsical entertainment from the Bubble Pirate will keep the fun going throughout the event. The first 100 guests can create free pink and green slime at Slime Kitchen, with additional themed slime available for purchase. Visitors can stop by the Princess Project booth to support local teens through dress donations and volunteer opportunities, helping provide prom dresses and accessories to those who might not otherwise have them. They can also try their luck at the Plinko board for a chance to win “Wicked”-themed prizes from retailers. It’s a magical evening of creativity, music and community connection. As part of the celebration, Mission Valley encourages guests to share the warmth by donating new or gently worn coats to the ongoing One Warm Coat drive, benefiting local families in need this season. The Something Wicked event is free and open to the public; no pre-registration is required.

This 2-hour interactive gathering offers gentle guidance, education, and ritual practices to help navigate grief during this time of year. Hosted by Wendy Kessler, Grief Guide, this is a time for us to come together and acknowledge that the holidays can present additional challenges for those who are grieving. Wendy will share practical ways to navigate the season and show us how knowledge, ritual and creativity can aid in the integration of grief. Together, we will: - Learn about the nature of grief and tools for navigating hard days - Explore the history and healing power of ritual - Create a personalized candle ritual scape to take home - Share in community conversation and connection The heart of our time will be the Five-Candle Ritual, a simple yet profound way to honor loved ones we miss. Each candle represents sorrow, courage, memories, love, and hope. Whether practiced in community or privately, this ritual can become a grounding tradition throughout the holidays and beyond. All supplies are included, and you’ll leave with a ritual candlescape, handouts, and practices you can return to at home. Feel free to bring-your-own special items that you'd like to include in your candlescape - a favorite container like a tray or basket, trinkets and mementos to personalize your creation. Bressi Ranch Village Center, an open-air shopping center in the heart of the Bressi Ranch community in Carlsbad, California, invites the community to celebrate the season during its free “Ho-Ho-Ho-Down Holiday Workshop” event on Saturday, December 6th, from noon to 3 p.m. in the Bressi Ranch Park at the patio near Peet’s Coffee & Tea. "Comics, Bande Dessinée, Fumetti, and Manga: Comics in Many Forms"—A conversation about comics in their many forms. Vin Deighan (aka Frank Quitely), Laurence Grove (director of the Stirling Maxwell Centre for the Study of Text/Image Cultures at the University of Glasgow and president of the International Bande Dessinée Society), Antonio Ianotta (University of San Diego), and Van Tarpley (San Diego State University) join moderator Elizabeth Pollard (co-director, Center for Comics Studies at SDSU) for a discussion exploring the similarities and differences of English-language comics, French bande dessinée, Italian fumetti, and Japanese manga. Sarah Beckman is Executive Director of Outside The Lens (OTL), a San Diego nonprofit media arts organization that engages 2,700+ young people annually—97% from systemically marginalized communities—to build creative confidence, explore career pathways, and drive social impact through storytelling. A creative strategist and visual storyteller with 25 years of nonprofit leadership, Sarah has guided Outside The Lens from a grassroots organization into a recognized innovator in creative youth development and media literacy, partnering with institutions like The Getty Museum on Voice Out, a regional exhibition that amplifies the perspectives of young artists. Sarah’s leadership philosophy is simple: create conditions for others to thrive. Whether expanding programs like Media Makers—which serves young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities—or securing catalyst funding for Balboa Park's Botanical Building during her tenure at Forever Balboa Park, she leads with curiosity and trust. She’s also the creative mind behind Culture & Cocktails at the San Diego Museum of Art and has presented at Public Lands Alliance and International Placemaking Week conferences. A Minnesota native with degrees in Journalism and Gender & Women's Studies from the University of Wisconsin–Madison, Sarah was recently named a 2025 San Diego Magazine Nonprofit Pioneer. A writer and photographer who believes in magic, hustle, and flow, she lives in Rancho Peñasquitos with her husband and twin sons who attend Cal Poly. Join the Ilan-Lael Foundation for their Pacific Rim Park Picnic on November 22 at Shelter Island Park from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. This free event allows guests to participate in workshops as they reflect on the communities that came together for the Pacific Rim project. There will be free art stations onsite allowing guests to experiment with art and reflect on our coastal home. One of the workshops with clay gives guests a hands-on look at an upcoming exhibit at Oceanside Museum of Art. Shelter Island is home to a public art piece created by the late artist James Hubbell, alongside students from around the globe. The “Pearl of the Pacific” highlights how art and architecture can transcend cultural divides, inspire dialogue, and serve as tools of diplomacy, especially a timely message in a world marked by increasing polarization. Through the Ilan-Lael Foundation, his vision lives on in annual peace walks and ongoing Art Diplomacy initiatives, including the creation of new peace parks worldwide. In spirit of bringing the community together, the picnic will be potluck style. Each guest is encouraged to bring a dish inspired by the diverse countries around the Pacific Rim and can sign up online. Parking at the event is first come first serve and the foundation encourages guests to carpool.
