  • Until fairly recently, joining the Peace Corps usually meant living in a remote location and leaving behind family, friends and way of life. But mobile devices and the Internet are changing how volunteers serve -- and how they keep in touch with home. This connectivity is helpful for the volunteers, but not always for the Peace Corps staff.

  • Scientists say they've developed a technique that reconnects the severed ends of a nerve, allowing it to begin carrying messages again very quickly — at least in rats. Usually, severed nerves must regrow from the point of injury — a process that can take months, if it ever happens.
  • Spontaneous gatherings, organized through Facebook or Twitter, began innocently enough, with hundreds of people dancing to Michael Jackson's "Thriller" in Times Square or pillow-fighting in San Francisco. But in a number of cities, flash mobs have grown unruly and led to vandalism, theft or violence, police say.
