The North Coast Strings is a dynamic string orchestra program designed for adult learners of the violin, viola, cello, and upright bass. The spring session offers the following group sections: Beginner 1 Rehearses on Tuesdays from 4 p.m. – 5:15 p.m. This section is designed for beginners with minimal or no experience playing a stringed instrument. Focusing on foundational skills, participants will learn basic techniques, how to read music and the joy of ensemble playing in a supportive and encouraging environment. Beginner 2 Rehearses on Tuesdays from 4 p.m. – 5:15 p.m. This section is for players who have studied a stringed instrument for a year or two and are ready to take the next step in their musical journey. Participants will build on their foundational skills, improving their technique and musicality while learning to play together as a cohesive group. Orchestra One Rehearses on Tuesdays from 5:30 p.m. –6:45 p.m. Orchestra One is the intermediate level of the program, perfect for musicians who have been learning their instrument for several years and are comfortable reading music and playing in multiple positions. The repertoire is thoughtfully selected to challenge early- to mid-intermediate players while ensuring a rewarding and enjoyable experience. North Coast Strings Orchestra Rehearses on Tuesdays from 7 p.m. – 9 p.m. The North Coast Strings Orchestra is the pinnacle of our program, led by the inspirational and award-winning conductor Alyze Dreiling. North City is set to host a free outdoor movie night on Friday, October 25, featuring Disney’s "Coco"! The festivities begin at 5 p.m. with games, family activities, and movie character meet-and-greets, followed by the movie screening at 6:30 p.m. The event will feature a Mariachi Band, Dia de los Muertos decor with an ofrenda, a festive straw bale and pumpkin display, and special appearances by Coco’s beloved characters, Miguel and Héctor. Attendees will receive complimentary popcorn and can purchase an array of bites from North City’s eateries. Options include favorites like pizza from Buona Forchetta, sliders, fries, and other bites from Draft Republic, custom ice cream from award-winning Wynston’s Ice Cream, make-your-own cookie kits from Maya’s Cookies, and handheld bites from Milonga Empanadas. J.T. Burke’s highly anticipated exhibition, "Paradise," makes its San Diego debut at the Mandell Weiss Gallery on October 4, 2024, offering viewers an exploration of myth and utopia. Opening as part of the San Diego Ballet’s 35th season launch event, "Overture," the exhibit promises an engaging blend of contemporary art and performance. Exhibit runs through Jan. 17, 2025. Burke draws inspiration from vintage costume jewelry, sourced from swap meets, garage sales, and forgotten drawers, transforming these discarded artifacts into luminous visions of an imagined utopia. Through intricate digital manipulation, he creates surreal compositions that blur the line between the real and the fantastical, inviting viewers to lose themselves in the intricate details where the mundane meets the mythical. The opening coincides with "Overture," the San Diego Ballet's season debut event celebrating its 35th anniversary. November 15 | Noon - 1 p.m. | Intertribal Resource Center Join us for an engaging session on the role of magic systems in fiction presented by Cole Neal, Iipay Kumeyaay student assistant at the ITRC. Explore how magic brings mystery and excitement across genres. Everyone is welcome to this free event and food will be served during the presentation. The Intertribal Resource Center is located on the 1st floor of the Student Services Center in SSC Room #187. We are located at the corner of Rupertus Way and Myers Drive, south of Price Center East. Every November, UC San Diego recognizes and celebrates the achievements, cultures, and contributions of Native American people and tribes during Native American Heritage Month. The UC San Diego community greatly respects the land and the Kumeyaay people of the area where our campus is located. We acknowledge their tremendous contributions to our region and thank them for their stewardship.

The Library's Autumn Concert Series takes place on Fridays from September 6 to October 25. Each concert will begin at 1 p.m. in the Winn Room. Doors will open 15 minutes prior to the performance. On September 27, Vania Pimentel will perform a variety of Brazilian music on piano. Concert pianist Vania Pimentel, born and raised in Brazil, has been promoting Brazilian music in creative recital programs. She has a BA in Music and another BA in Philosophy from Brazil, KA graduate artist diploma from Germany, Masters in Piano Performance and Pedagogy, and DMA from the University of Houston. Her doctoral dissertation was on Brazilian toccatas, and her CD “Brazilian Toccatas and Toccatinas” was praised by the Brazilian Academy of Music and newspaper critics in Rio de Janeiro in the year of 2000, five hundreds years of Brazil’s discovery by the Portuguese. Dr. Pimentel became a member of Pi Kappa Lambda National Music Honor Society, and worked as an assistant teacher at the Moores School of Music and the Texas Music Festival. In Brazil, she had worked for 14 years as a piano professor in Curitiba, PR. Her first award at a piano competition was at the age of seven in Rio de Janeiro. Her top awards are from J. S. Bach International Piano Competition in Paris (1984), and Jaen Competition in Spain (1982). Dr. Pimentel lived in Italy from 2005 until 2009, and performed at the series Pianomaster in Gravedonamon Lake Como, and chamber music at the Blaue Blumen concerts in Frankfurt. Afterwards, she lived in San Diego until 2022. She performed recitals at Palomar College, Fallbrook Library, Coronado Library, Encinitas Library, the Athenaeum, Carmel Valley Library, and chamber music in Temecula: Classics at the Merc. She performs frequently in Brazil, and has given masterclasses at many universities there. In 2020, she performed and taught at the 37th Music Workshop of Curitiba, in Paraná state. Last year she presented a solo recital during the Music Week of Lapinha, PR, and last April at the Chapel Santa Maria in Curitiba. Currently she lives in Miami.

This is an exhibit organized by Art, Power, Equity at J. Walcher Communications. Lopez’s exhibition “Casa De Las Flores” opens with a reception and viewing on Saturday, July 13, 6-9 p.m, featuring a brief artist talk at 7 p.m. The show is open to the public every Saturday from 1-4 p.m. from July 13 through August 10, and during the week by appointment only, info@artpowerequity.com Lopez's exhibition features work consisting mostly of monotype and relief prints that are often hand embellished and resemble Mexican textiles. Kelvin creates what he calls contemporary “servilletas” (napkins) by adding embroidery and crochet borders onto his monotypes. This show will feature a range of monotype and relief installations as well as mixed media works featuring glass castings, grown crystals and live plants.
