Dreams and Contemplations II: Exploring the Enchanted Realm of Ceramic Tile Paintings where imagination meets clay, uniting Dreams, Emotions and Eternal Wisdom. Bypassing the conventional academic route, Karen Bouse’s journey began in the vibrant realm of the Motion Picture Industry, where she thrived as a Sign Writer/Graphic Artist. Within a decade in this field, she progressed from Journeyman to Supervisor, where the opportunity to work with diverse global artists provided an unconventional education. In spite of achieving cultural success, the inner question, “Who Am I?”, prompted her to forsake status and comfort for self-discovery, transitioning a move from Los Angeles to rural San Diego County. Armed with a foundation in graphic arts and an extended period of ceramic study, fate interceded when the destructive wildfires of 2003 consumed the artist’s home and studio. From the ashes emerged a new chapter: the establishment of Indigo Design Studios, dedicated to crafting tailor-made tiles for individuals and businesses in the San Diego area. Through these projects, the untapped potential of tiles as conduits for storytelling was unearthed, evolving organically into the captivating medium of Tile Paintings. Over a span of more than fifteen years, in the seclusion of creative solitude, the focal point of her artistic endeavors has been to encapsulate the lessons and insights that arose from taking that leap beyond the safety of the known and trusting in the process of living. This exhibition, hosted by Encinitas Arts Partnership at Encinitas City Hall, marks the inaugural presentation of twenty-two out of a total of thirty-seven pieces produced during this period. The essence of this collection aims to rouse the imagination and ignite conversation, while also demonstrating the boundless frontiers of ceramic tile as an artistic medium. Above all, the core intention behind the sharing of these personal revelations is to illuminate the interconnected thread that binds all of humanity— transcending temporal, spatial, and individual boundaries. To explore these works firsthand is to grasp their dimension, texture, and energy, which photography inevitably fails to capture fully. The artist extends an invitation to experience this transformative exhibition and welcomes the opportunity to engage in discussions about the work. The exhibit offers an experience distinct from mere imagery, as it unveils the tactile and energetic qualities that thrive within each piece. The Grand Alliance between Black and Jewish leaders, known largely for shared work on Civil Rights in the 1960s, has a complicated legacy--and an uncertain future between these communities.

"Rising Tide," debuted in Spring of 2021 at the Het Scheepvaartmuseum, National Maritime Museum in Amsterdam. "Rising Tide" visualizes the human costs of the climate crisis. Dutch documentarian photographer Kadir van Lohuizen illustrates the dramatic consequences of climate change across the world through photographs, video, drone images, and sound. In response to the pressing implications of rising sea levels, The Netherlands faced a critical wake-up call on January 8, 2019, when a severe Northwestern storm, compounded by spring tide, triggered flooding on the island of Terschelling. Notably, the quays of West Terschelling were submerged, along with the surrounding area, including the iconic ‘Wierschuur’ at Easter Terschelling. This alarming incident highlights the increasing frequency of such events and the need to address the impacts of climate change. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, acclaimed artist Kadir van Lohuizen has embarked on a compelling journey to capture the profound consequences, of the climate crisis, particularly its manifestation in rising sea levels. Through an exploration of various global locations, including Greenland, Bangladesh, Papua New Guinea, Panama, Kiribati, Fiji, Jakarta, Miami, New York, and his native Netherlands, Van Lohuizen seeks to shed light on the irreversible force of climate change. His personal artistic vision and unwavering discipline are harnessed to present a thought-provoking narrative that transcends mere statistics, delving into the human stories behind the escalating environmental challenge. Russian born artist Evgeniya Golik’s highly detailed, pop-surrealist work easily activates the imagination of viewers. Her paintings and drawings are like doors to a mystical realm containing a myriad of beautiful human faces and fantastical creatures who express their secrets and stories through symbolic language. Her penchant for hatch shading and meticulously rendered hair catches the eye just as much as the unusual subject matter depicted. Introduced to esoteric subject matter at a young age by her paternal grandmother, she explores subjects such as medicinal plants, natural remedies, astrology, and fortune telling in her work. Golik’s works will be on view at Sparks Gallery from May 4 – June 30, 2024 with a reception on Saturday, May 4, 2024 from 5-8p.m. RSVP is encouraged, RSVP here!
