  • WRITING DOWN THE SENSES 4: Textures & Topographies (4th of 4) So much more than superficial appearance, surfaces influence the feel of things. Not only rough or smooth but warm/cool or wet/moist/dry, our sense of touch is finely developed in our experience but tactile not often deployed to fullest possible effect in our writing. Let your fingertips feel the way. You will be emailed the Zoom link 24 hours before the start of class. If you sign up less than 24 hours before the start of the class, please email Kristen at programs@sandiegowriters.org for your link.
  • Join us on January 13, 2023 at 5:30pm for an evening filled with visual and auditory experiences that explore the works of ICA San Diego Artist-in-Resident, Shellie Zhang. The evening will begin with an artist talk by Zhang, who will give us insight into her artistic practice, ideas, and research centered on diasporic communities, marketplaces, and Chinatowns. Zhang will discuss the two bodies of work in her exhibition, What We Bring and Leave, and her new residency project. Stay for a performance by Art of Elan showcasing San Diego-based, award-winning composer Lei Liang, whose work combines East and West in a colorful and dramatic fusion in orchestral, theatrical, and chamber pieces. Zhang and Liang introduce the performance with an in-conversation where they will discuss ideas of home, language, and diasporic communities – themes that run through both of their practices. Art of Elan is thrilled to collaborate with ICA San Diego for a season of programs inspired by ICA San Diego’s Artists-in-Residence highlighting different artistic approaches to the expression of ideas. Art of Elan will be working closely with each Artist-in-Residence to create a program inspired by the themes in the artist's work. Event Timeline: 5:30 p.m. | Welcome Reception 6:15 p.m. | Shellie Zhang Artist Talk followed by Q&A 7:15 p.m. | Art of Elan Performance introduced by Shellie Zhang and Lei Liang RSVP here. Bring your own chair or blanket and enjoy gourmet picnic snacks, entertainment, and performances. Ticket purchases and additional donations will benefit the “Kids Learning Through Music” M. Adler Lindberg Family scholarship fund, which provides music learning opportunities for young children through SDYS’ Chimes program. === Chimes (Childhood Introduction to Music Education, with Smiles) is an SDYS program that highlights one of the most integral phases of child growth and development: the period of growth that takes place from birth to age 5. Chimes classes, for children ages 0-5 and their parents/caregivers, provide meaningful music-making experiences that strengthen family connections and enhance early growth and development. Children develop musical motor skills through singing, movement, rhythm activities, hands-on instrument play, and exposure to a variety of orchestra instruments and genres of music. The program is specifically designed to create pathways for children to participate in ensemble-based programs for youth. Learn more at sdys.org/chimes-picnic.
