Illustrating Spain in the US is a creative dialogue that combines the graphic expressiveness of comics and their authors, with the inquisitive perspective of scholars who have written a series of complementary articles. Comic authors have built comic strips that feed on academic knowledge and demonstrate that Spain has been part of the American reality since long before the very foundation of the American country, This Spanish energy continues to be present in the imagination, talent, and creativity that emanates from everything Spanish and so fascinates Americans. Commissioned by the Cultural Office of the Embassy of Spain and curated by award-winning writer Ana Merino, this project aims at taking a better look at seven potential sides of the inspiring Spanish presence resulting in comic books of very diverse inspiration. The comic artists that have participated in the project are Sergio García & Lola Moral (Missions and the Camino Real), Rayco Pulido (Revolutionary War), Ana Penyas & Seisdedos (Immigration), Anapurna (Hispanism), Mireia Pérez (Science), Carla Berrocal (Cinema), Max (Art), and Sonia Pulido (Cover). The experts of each field are Lucia Cotarelo (Hispanism), Estrella de Diego (Cinema), J. Michael Francis (Missions and the Camino Real), Juan Pimentel (Science), Eduardo Garriegues (Revolutionary War), James Fernandez & Luis Argeo (Immigration), and María Dolores Jiménez-Blanco (Art). Based out of Conrad Prebys Learning Center and sprawling into the galleries, we invite you to a Play Day inspired by Celia Álvarez Muñoz’s art installation "El Limite" (1988) and the stories her veteran father shared. Together, we will combine and paint wooden blocks to create toy trains while learning about veteran artists in MCASD’s collection. Art activity: Create toy trains with the MCASD education team in Prebys Education Center Schedule: - At 10 a.m., explore our galleries with a kid friendly tour focused on Veteran artists in the museum’s collection. - At 12:30 a.m., listen to train stories, songs, and rhymes in Storytime with Ms. Katia from the La Jolla/ Riford Library. - From 10 a.m. - 1 p.m., Enjoy live music by local DJ Xochi, a book nook, and free play in Jacobs Hall. *Museum admission is free from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. for all visitors, with Play Day offerings happening between 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. MCASD is a Blue Star Museum offering free admission to military members and their families until September 4, 2023. The Barona Band of Mission Indians proudly invites the San Diego community to celebrate Native American heritage at the 51st Annual Barona Powwow over Labor Day Weekend. The three-day cultural celebration starts on Friday, September 1 with gourd dancing at 6 p.m. and a dramatic grand entry of dancers in colorful regalia at 8 p.m. The Barona Powwow will continue Saturday and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 11 p.m. Admission and parking are free. Hundreds of Native American participants of all ages and from across the country will showcase their dancing skills as they compete in a variety of categories, such as the Fancy Shawl Dance and Grass Dance, for more than $75,000 in prize money. In addition to beautiful regalia and dancing, spectators will be able to enjoy Hand Drum contests, singing and music, popular Native American food including delicious Indian fry bread tacos, arts and crafts, and handcrafted jewelry. The Barona Powwow will be held at the Barona Sports Complex located on the Barona Indian Reservation just one mile north of the Barona Resort & Casino on Wildcat Canyon Road in Lakeside.
