In this month-long introductory ceramic handbuilding course, students explore hands-on, hand building work in clay. Students will create functional and nonfunctional ceramic art. Learn how to create with coils, slab construction and clay pinching methods. See the beauty of the final results as your pieces come out of the kiln. Students will create multiple pieces and learn how to glaze finished artwork. Ages 12-17 welcome! All materials included. ArtWalk Liberty Station is back for its 18th year, bringing a weekend-long celebration of arts and culture to San Diego’s Liberty Station on Saturday, August 5 and Sunday, August 6, 2023. The show celebrates creativity from both sides of the border, with more than 175 artists coming from across several states and Mexico to show and sell their artwork, including paintings, photography, glass and ceramic, jewelry, and sculpture. The Arts District at Liberty Station has blossomed into San Diego’s premier venue for arts, museums, dining, and entertainment. The fabulous outdoor setting features a verdant lawn and an abundance of free parking.

Held every Summer since 1998, the Carlsbad Village Association’s Art in the Village will return on Sunday, June 25 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., bringing 115 local and regional fine artists for a unique one-day, open-air art show. All artwork is juried and patrons can meet the artists in their booths the day of the event. Oil, watercolor, mixed media, digital, photography, glasswork, woodworking, jewelry, pottery, and more will be on display and for purchase. Celebrating the dynamic art culture in Carlsbad Village and the surrounding areas, this annual event attracts 7,500 art enthusiasts each year. Starting at 9 a.m., just two blocks from Carlsbad State Beach, attendees can browse dynamic exhibits and meet the artists along State Street and Grand Avenue. Art in the Village will also feature: - Live sculpting, pottery, jewelry making, and painting demos throughout the day. - Pop-Up Art: An Interactive Encounter (formerly Family Open Studios), that provides a 400 square foot art-making pavilion for children and their families, operated by the City of Carlsbad Cultural Arts Office. - Live music on the Grand Avenue stage by The Ramblin’ Sweethearts and the That’s Right Band sponsored by Ting, with local musicians playing throughout the venue. - Food, Wine, and Beer Garden - this is a family-friendly location in the heart of the venue at the corner of State Street and Grand Avenue that will offer gourmet grilled cheese sandwiches by Drippin’ Kitchen, fish burritos and poke by Nico’s Fish Market, and fresh Acai Bowls by Acai Surf & Roll, along with craft beer by Pure Project and wine by Carruth Cellars. - New this year is a vibrant temporary pop-up art installation consisting of 10 curated surfboards by local and regional artists. Each Carlsbad-centric image is unique and highlights a different medium including carving, stained glass, mosaic, mixed media, airbrushing, acrylic and oil painting. Artists Dwight Hwang and Oriana Poindexter are proud to present Impressions in Light & Shadow, an exhibition featuring new gyotaku and photo-based prints at Perspectives Space in Encinitas, California. This month-long exhibition highlights the unique beauty and majesty of the giant kelp forest ecosystems off Southern California’s coastline. The reception is free and open to the public with an Eventbrite RSVP. Light appetizers provided by Wrench & Rodent Seabasstropub and wine by Zio Baffa. About the Artists: Dwight Hwang creates classical Japanese gyotaku art and European nature printing. Whether his subject is a fish, plants, birds, or even a person, he pushes not only the art but himself to bring awe, memories, and quiet contemplation to viewers worldwide. Partnered with institutions like NOAA and Patagonia, his work has been exhibited in museums such as the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles, displayed in hospitality such as the Four Seasons Resorts, and showcased in publications including Forbes. Oriana Poindexter is a photographer and marine scientist focused on the intersection of art, science, and marine natural resources. After working for nearly a decade in fisheries science with the Scripps Institution of Oceanography and NOAA Fisheries, she now focuses on the use of photography to help viewers understand the ever-changing natural world. Her work has been featured by the Getty Museum and The Wall Street Journal, and she has created interpretive visual exhibits for the Aquarium of the Pacific and the Birch Aquarium.

Illustrating Spain in the US is a creative dialogue that combines the graphic expressiveness of comics and their authors, with the inquisitive perspective of scholars who have written a series of complementary articles. Comic authors have built comic strips that feed on academic knowledge and demonstrate that Spain has been part of the American reality since long before the very foundation of the American country, This Spanish energy continues to be present in the imagination, talent, and creativity that emanates from everything Spanish and so fascinates Americans. Commissioned by the Cultural Office of the Embassy of Spain and curated by award-winning writer Ana Merino, this project aims at taking a better look at seven potential sides of the inspiring Spanish presence resulting in comic books of very diverse inspiration. The comic artists that have participated in the project are Sergio García & Lola Moral (Missions and the Camino Real), Rayco Pulido (Revolutionary War), Ana Penyas & Seisdedos (Immigration), Anapurna (Hispanism), Mireia Pérez (Science), Carla Berrocal (Cinema), Max (Art), and Sonia Pulido (Cover). The experts of each field are Lucia Cotarelo (Hispanism), Estrella de Diego (Cinema), J. Michael Francis (Missions and the Camino Real), Juan Pimentel (Science), Eduardo Garriegues (Revolutionary War), James Fernandez & Luis Argeo (Immigration), and María Dolores Jiménez-Blanco (Art). You're Invited! On the first Friday of every month, the Arts District in Liberty Station is packed with ways to enjoy the best in life! Whether your visit includes a waterfront walk, a bite & drink from one of the great restaurants or market, or a bit of fun shopping, San Diego Craft Collective will always have a free, family-friendly craft for kids that evening from 5-6 p.m. Each month the craft changes, so pop in while you're visiting and get crafty! July's Craft: Button Art This project is great for children of all ages. Young children may need help from an adult. From 5 - 6p.m., Free Kids Craft hosted outdoors in our back lot. Based out of Conrad Prebys Learning Center and sprawling into the galleries, we invite you to a Play Day inspired by Celia Álvarez Muñoz’s art installation "El Limite" (1988) and the stories her veteran father shared. Together, we will combine and paint wooden blocks to create toy trains while learning about veteran artists in MCASD’s collection. Art activity: Create toy trains with the MCASD education team in Prebys Education Center Schedule: - At 10 a.m., explore our galleries with a kid friendly tour focused on Veteran artists in the museum’s collection. - At 12:30 a.m., listen to train stories, songs, and rhymes in Storytime with Ms. Katia from the La Jolla/ Riford Library. - From 10 a.m. - 1 p.m., Enjoy live music by local DJ Xochi, a book nook, and free play in Jacobs Hall. *Museum admission is free from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. for all visitors, with Play Day offerings happening between 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. MCASD is a Blue Star Museum offering free admission to military members and their families until September 4, 2023.
