However tehre are in fact two O'Mallery families, one white and one black. Each appear in different, yet similar scenes that juxtapose to create a dialogue about racial and family politics. Culinary Historians of San Diego will present “Three Thousand Years of Spanish Food in One Hour,” featuring Richard Foss, at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 17, in the Neil Morgan Auditorium of the San Diego Central Library, 330 Park Blvd. The event is free and open to the public and a tasting will follow the presentation. Spanish cuisine has become one of the most popular in the world, but the roots of this cuisine are little understood. This fast-paced lecture explains how the Greeks, Phoenicians, Arabs and other cultures contributed to the diversity of Spanish food. Richard Foss has been writing professionally since 1986, when he started reviewing restaurants for a Los Angeles newspaper. He has contributed to over forty different publications, including the Encyclopedia of World Food Cultures and Oxford Companion to Sweets. Richard has taught culinary history in extension programs, done lecture tours in the US, Australia and New Zealand, been a culinary consultant for museums, and is the board of the Culinary Historians of Southern California. His book on the history of rum was published in 2012. “Food in the Air and Space” was released in 2014. He is the Executive Director of Collage: A Place for Art and Culture, a nonprofit arts center located in San Pedro, California.

Join Oceanside Public Library and Glassless Minds for a free live poetry contest on Saturday, July 15 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Civic Center Library Courtyard at 330 N. Coast Highway. The Find Your Voice Poetry Contest is a one round, one poem poetry contest for adults that will offer 1st, 2nd and 3rd place cash prizes. Sign up starts at 4:30 p.m. and there are 17 spots. The poem does not need to be memorized and should be 5 minutes or less. The event will feature a short set by Rudy K. Francisco, who will also serve as a judge along with San Diego Poet Laureate Jason Magabo Perez and Dr. Angélica M. Yañez. Glassless Minds is a local non-profit that has facilitated and fostered constructive emotional outlets and personal expression in an accepting and safe space for teenagers and young adults through a variety of mediums: spoken word poetry, creative writing, poetry, music and visual art for the last ten years. Support for this program is provided by The Friends of the Oceanside Public Library. The Oceanside Public Library aims to empower the community by promoting literacy, information access, civic engagement, cultural inclusiveness and openness to new ideas. Harold López-Nussa: “Timba a la Americana” features López-Nussa on piano and his brother, Ruy Adrian López-Nussa, on drums. Cuban pianist and composer Harold López-Nussa sets out to capture the stirring sensation of walking the streets of Havana with an exhilarating marriage of jazz and Cuban pop music. López-Nussa has built a global following in jazz and beyond, having burst upon the international scene when he won first prize in the solo piano competition at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 2005. He has gone on to play the world’s leading jazz venues and festivals. His tight-knit quartet captivates audiences with a driving vivaciousness that “bridges generations and genres” (Billboard). His music reflects the full range and richness of Cuban music, with its distinctive combination of classical, folkloric, and popular elements, in addition to a virtuosic embrace of jazz improvisation and interaction. Join us for a day of fun to celebrate and kick off San Diego Pride! Local San Diego Queens from the Haus of St. James, will join us from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. for Storytime with Queens, followed by a Q&A session to learn more about the Queens themselves and the art of drag. Enjoy Pride-themed arts and crafts all day – featuring a cookie decorating contest to be judged by the Queens! All programming, except for the cookie decorating contest, is included with standard Museum admission or membership.

Join instructor Suzanne Balestri to learn the basics of Fused Glass and create your own glass jewelry to keep for yourself or give as a gift. This fun workshop offers a perfect introduction to Kiln-Formed (fused) glass for beginners, and allows those who have worked with glass before to hone their abilities and finesse their skills. You will learn how fused glass differs from other forms of art glass, how to use the various tools involved in creating glass art, and how to cut and grind the glass you will be using in your wearable art project. Using a colorful array of glass and pre-fired adornments, you’ll construct abstract or representational designs to be fashioned into earrings, pendants, rings, cuff links, even belt buckles! Each student will have plenty of space in the kiln for several items! Your pieces will be fired in a glass kiln to completely fuse each design into one solid piece, and will be ready for you to pick up the following week. Workshop fee includes pre-workshop instructional videos, all glass, equipment, and kiln firing of several pieces. An Additional Supply Fee of $10 (cash only) is due to instructor at the workshop. It includes pre-fused adornments plus jewelry findings for up to 3 items (excluding leather for bracelets/belts). Additional findings, chains, cording, and leather for bracelets and belts will also be available for cash purchase. This workshop is recommended for all skill levels – ages 13 and up. Beginners welcome!
