A creative strategist and visual storyteller with 25 years of nonprofit leadership, Sarah has guided Outside The Lens from a grassroots organization into a recognized innovator in creative youth development and media literacy, partnering with institutions like The Getty Museum on Voice Out, a regional exhibition that amplifies the perspectives of young artists. Sarah’s leadership philosophy is simple: create conditions for others to thrive. Whether expanding programs like Media Makers—which serves young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities—or securing catalyst funding for Balboa Park's Botanical Building during her tenure at Forever Balboa Park, she leads with curiosity and trust. She’s also the creative mind behind Culture & Cocktails at the San Diego Museum of Art and has presented at Public Lands Alliance and International Placemaking Week conferences. A Minnesota native with degrees in Journalism and Gender & Women's Studies from the University of Wisconsin–Madison, Sarah was recently named a 2025 San Diego Magazine Nonprofit Pioneer. A writer and photographer who believes in magic, hustle, and flow, she lives in Rancho Peñasquitos with her husband and twin sons who attend Cal Poly. North City, San Marcos is hosting its first-ever Classic Car Show, celebrating craftsmanship, design, and the culture that defines Southern California’s car scene. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., visitors can explore 50+ stunning vehicles on display, ranging from vintage classics and woodies to modern, exotic, and high-end showpieces, and a Classic Car Restoration Exhibit by Conservative Auto Body Shop. Appealing to drivers of all ages, the Family Friendly event features a Toddler Street Course of electric ride-on cars and scooters around a custom racetrack, and a Head-to-Head DieCast Cars Race Course, as well as other activities and lawn games. A live DJ will set the vibe with music, raffle prize giveaways, and announcements throughout the day. Trophies will be awarded in multiple categories, including Best of Show. Guests will have a chance to win gift cards to North City’s local eateries. Create a unique Bandsaw Box! Sunday, December 21, from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. Bandsaw boxes are beginner-friendly and have a variety of uses. Once you make one you can make many! In this 7-hour workshop, students will create a box made from a single block of wood using the bandsaw. Students will learn to design and create organic forms on the bandsaw while observing wood grain and learning to make cross cuts and rip cuts. We will cover shop safety and methods for cutting and gluing your box. Students will also learn sanding best practices and how to achieve a perfect finish using beeswax. We welcome all makers, from beginners to advanced. Materials are provided. We recommend students bring your own eye protection, ear protection & apron. Aprons for sale here. No experience necessary. Ages 18+ welcome. Saturday, December 6, 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. Join us in the woodshop for this 4-hour brush making workshop! We will cover shop safety and how to use various machines such as the bandsaw, spindle sander, edge sander, and drill press. You will hone your carving skills by adding curves and texture to your piece. We will build upon machine knowledge and cover wood shaping using various hand tools such as rasps, files, spoke shaves, hand planes, chisels, and gouges. We will also discuss design principles, functional applications, the properties of wood, and brush materials such as Tampico fibers. At the end of the workshop, each student will leave with a unique brush to be used in the home, the shop, or as a beautiful sculpture or gift. Materials are provided. We recommend students bring their own eye protection, ear protection & apron. Aprons for sale here. No experience necessary. Ages 18+ welcome. Learn to Carve a Spoon! Sunday, November 16, 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. Beginning spoon carving. In this introduction course of carving Woodworker Paul Maschka will be sharing the ancient style of green wood hand carving with simple but very precise hand tools–a small carving axe, straight blade carving knife and a curved hook knife. With proper techniques, green wood can be intricately sculpted into extremely beautiful, functional and unique pieces of art. Paul specializes in Viking-era cutlery. This Scandinavian style is still being crafted around the world. In this workshop, students will be creating a straight tea spoon or straight cooking spoon. This class is designed for the beginner as well as more experienced carvers. There is no prerequisite for this class. All of the necessary tools and materials will be available to students for this class. Tools and chopping blocks will be available for purchase after the class. No experience necessary.
