  • Enjoy a Saturday evening of visual art as Encinitas civic and local art galleries and city partners swing open their doors at Art Night Encinitas from 5:30-8:30 p.m. The event celebrates the city’s diverse visual art scene at participating locations and is free to the public. Art Night Encinitas was conceived by the Commission for the Arts to bring focus to the civic art spaces and thriving visual art scene in Encinitas. In conversation with Edra Soto’s exhibition, create your own print inspired by the geometrically-patterned rejas (wrought-iron gates) and quiebrasoles (decorative concrete breeze blocks) found around many Puerto Rican homes. 4:00 pm – 4:45 pm | Art of Elan Performance Art of Elan, in collaboration with ICA San Diego, explores music as an entry point into the world of visual art in response to Edra Soto’s exhibition Graft. Art of Elan’s performance takes us on a journey: from the timeless music of J. S. Bach that can be found in almost every corner of the world to the vibrant sounds of composers Marco Granados, Gabriela Lena Frank, and Angelica Negrón, whose compositions all explore the intricacies of cross-cultural identities. This immersive, multisensory, and dynamic experience provides a unique perspective of how diasporic communities shape identities in new places. 5:00 pm – 5:30 pm | Conversation with Artist-in-Residence Edra Soto 5:30 pm | Q&A Edra Soto talks with Associate Curator, Guusje Sanders, about her exhibition, Graft. In this ongoing sculptural project, Soto examines the role of architecture in the construction of Puerto Rican national identity, and how the transplantation of familiar architecture abroad can reflect the experience of Puerto Rican immigrants as they navigate the diaspora.
