  • We are pleased to present "FORTUNE & FATE," an art show interrogating luck, destiny and providence hosted by Distinction Gallery. Do we control our futures? Are we the playthings or authors of fate? Our artists confront all such questions and more this March, in a showcase of paintings, drawings and mixed media pieces. Some have thought about luck as a subject matter, an arbitrary force external to people, places and things. Others have catechized fate via material qualities, following in the footsteps of expressionism. While all of our members are professional artists with countless corporate clients, all works on show have been independently created - purely through the auspices of imagination. Luck is illustrated by different cultures in different ways, from shamrocks to horseshoes to koi. Though not all of our members trade in symbology, we have such a variety of origins that visitors are apt to experience a world tour of perspectives in a single show. Original artworks and limited edition prints will be available, the opening reception is March 11 from 6-10 p.m. Divergence Art Collective was formed in 2022 with the aim of conducting themed group shows for collectors and artists. In a landscape of sameness and disposability, we value craftsmanship and the outré. Our artists have a wide variety of inspirations, from pop culture to literature, folklore and the natural world. While we are all from different backgrounds, we share the idiom of visual art and believe in executing it to a standard worthy of the form. Visitors are provided with an experience of techniques, aesthetics and subjects as varied as ourselves. As a collective, we are focused on presenting themed shows with an atmosphere both unique and unified. The shows are carefully curated by the artists themselves. - Divergence Art Collective. With live music from 7-9 p.m. by Mathew Gose! Show on view through March 11 - April 4 at Distinction Gallery Divergence Collective on Instagram
  • The Ramona Outdoor Play tells a story of love and bigotry in early California.
  • Artists: Lyndsay Bloom, Jessica Buie, Cat Gunn, Sarah Hotchkiss, Thomas Macie, Morgan Mandalay, Megan Mueller and Chris Warr 25th/Commercial on the Orange Line Barrio Logan on the Blue Line From the gallery: BEST PRACTICE is especially excited to present Thick Pile, a group exhibition curated by BEST PRACTICE Creative Director Joe Yorty that brings together the work of eight artists from San Diego, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Austin, Texas. Thick Pile consists of work in painting, sculpture, collage, photography, and video. The exhibition was not conceptualized around any distinct theme or topic, but rather assembled at the instinctive whim of its curator. Pile is a word used in the soft flooring industry to define the length of the fibers and loops in a carpet or area rug. A thick pile carpet, because of its abundance of fibrous material, offers maximum comfort while magnifying its capacity to accumulate filth over time. The curator’s intention is not to connect the works in this show through these concomitant but conflicting themes of luxury and revulsion, one that is central to his own studio practice, but rather assemble the exhibition in much the same manner that he accumulates materials and ideas for his own artworks. Using intuition, he has gathered and arranged these works in the gallery to attempt an exchange through approximation between objects and images that may initially seem disparate. His aim is to cast a light that may reveal nuanced approaches to reading and experiencing each of the works in this exhibition and, more generally, each artists’ studio practices. And, for him, whether or not his attempt is effective, he can rest assured that the gallery is filled with a lot of very good art. Read more about the artists here. • NOTE: Extended run until June 26. From the KPBS weekend arts preview: What do the '80s band The Go-Go's and 16th century Chivalric literature? Diversionary Theatre's upcoming production of "Head Over Heels," penned by Jeff Whitty ("Avenue Q"), might offer one answer. This is a "jukebox musical," so instead of original songs performed by the characters to advance the plot, existing, popular music is used. In this case, it's music by the '80s band The Go-Go's, based on Sir Philip Sidney's "Arcadia." The story effectively follows a royal family as they attempt to counteract an ominous prophesy — with some intrigue, jealousy and scandal along the way. —Julia Dixon Evans, KPBS From the organizers: From the visionary behind "Avenue Q" comes a bold new Broadway musical fairytale where Once Upon a Time crashes into our present moment. In the mythical land of Arcadia, the royal family is challenged to set out on a journey to save their beloved kingdom from extinction. Through their adventure gender roles are upended, relationships liberated, and love is discovered in the most surprising of ways. Told to the hypnotic beat of the iconic 80’s all-girl rock band The Go-Go’s, Head Over Heels joyously unveils a path to a new world where diversity is celebrated and ladies lead! • Come learn to crochet a granny square at our March Craftivism Class! As a community class we will all create squares to add to our community Craftivism Quilt. You’ll have time to make at least a few granny squares. Once you get started you won’t want to stop! Crochet has typically been deemed a women’s craft, separating the work from the male dominated sphere of “Fine Art.” In recent history, feminist artists have affirmed crochet as fine art, and worthy of being an inclusive activity and a means to use your voice through craft. About Craftivism Classes: From yarn bombing to femmage, the Women's Museum's Craftivism Classes invites a local artist featured in the museum's current "Crafting Feminism" exhibit to teach participants a crafting skill and how they can use it in their activism. All classes are bilingual and taught in English and Spanish Non-WMC Members: $20 WMC Members: $10
