Celebrate International Women’s Day with a special movie and craft night at the Women’s Museum of California. Join us for a special screening of WomanHouse, a historic documentary about one of the most important feminist cultural events of the 1970s. Judy Chicago (best-known as the creator of THE DINNER PARTY) and Miriam Shapiro rented an old Hollywood mansion and altered its interior through decor and set-pieces to "search out and reveal the female experience...the dreams and fantasies of women as they sewed, cooked, washed and ironed away their lives." WomanHouse is a fascinating historical look at feminism, its reception in the 1970s, and the ever-important relationship between art and social change. Before the film screening WMC Artistic Director Katie Ruiz will discuss the importance of the WomanHouse art project and teach attendees how to make a simple craft inspired by the feminist art movement of the 1970s. As you may know, we had previously planned a Yiddish-tango-themed fundraiser for YAAANA and Yiddishland for this November. However, following October 7th’s hair-raisingly horrific pogrom, massacre, and abduction of innocents in Israel, we decided to postpone tango for another time while we mourn for the lives lost and pray for the rapid return of the abducted, the safety of the people of Israel, and the return of peace to the Land. The event will focus instead on tikkun olam and half of the fundraiser proceeds will be provided to San Diego-based Adopt a Family Foundation, which provides support to terrorism victims in Israel. Highlighting the event will be several internationally known artists including Yuval Ron, coming to us from Los Angeles, and our board members Yale Strom, and Elizabeth Schwartz, who all generously agreed to volunteer for this special event. The program will feature storytelling and musical selections representing Yiddish and Israeli cultural traditions, intended to connect Yiddishkeit with the cultural traditions of Medines Yisroel. We hope you will take this opportunity to come together, partake in some incredible music and Israel-themed food and drink, and contribute to important causes, keeping in mind the importance of staying together, as a caring community and nation, facing multiple challenges, with resilience and determination. The resulting corners become prime loci for the placement of cast concrete, geometrically organic forms that enlist and activate the entire gallery space as both foil and collaborator. Related hanging, pendulum pieces when swung arc back and forth against the white walls leaving elegant tracings of their movement. The final performance of San Diego Unified School District’s (SDUSD) middle school honor band and orchestra will occur on Saturday, February 4 at Point Loma Nazarene University from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm. It features the finest middle school Honor Band students. These are auditioned groups, including the best players selected to rehearse and perform under the direction of two special guest conductors for an enriching musical experience. Students actively engaged in and activity funded, at least in part, by The VAPA Foundation, which strives to enhance the quality of and access to arts education in the SDUSD. Oolong Gallery is happy to invite you to the upcoming show "Chiffonnier / Ragpicker" — an exhibition in dialogue between two Dutch artists: Bert Frings (Rotterdam, NL) and Bas Louter (Los Angeles, Calif.). The title cites French artist Edouard Manet’s painting "The Ragpicker" (1865-1870). The traditional chiffonnier makes a living by picking up and selling rags and junk. Bert and Bas produce art by reusing objects and images for practical or aesthetic purposes and so prolonging their usefulness. Bas Louter and Bert Frings met in Utrecht, Netherlands in 1997, and their ongoing dialogue now continues on view at Oolong Gallery. The exhibition will be about their favorite Dutch artist René Daniëls, the influence of moving to the colossal hybrid city LA and of classical vanitas — still life paintings of the late Middle Ages and Renaissance.
