Entitled "Spolia", this year's festival explores the traces of the past recast into unique new expressions, just as ancient artifacts are reincorporated into newer architecture to become spolia. Inspired by Katherine Balch's Musica Spolia, this theme threads through works including Yu Kuwabara's Five Images-In nomine and Adam Greene's Memos, and works incorporating recorded sound fragments like D. Edward Davis's broad call and Kay He's On the Rime of the Fading Forest. We are proud to prominently feature Southern California and Arizona-based composers, including some former residents and recent arrivals, among them Christopher Adler, Katherine Balch, Adam Borecki, Franklin Cox, Adam Greene, Kay He, Texu Kim, and Philippe Manoury. This Hobbit Day, journey to the East Kingdom for an enchanting evening of song, story, and dance. Spend the last evening of summer in a beautiful amphitheatre at the Water Conservation Garden in El Cajon. There, innovative classical production company Cinballera Entertainment is putting on "Lady of the Ring," a chamber ballopera based on J.R.R. Tolkien's timeless saga "The Lord of the Rings." The story will be told twice, first through song and then through dance. The opera is composed of diverse songs, including a rare song cycle commissioned by Tolkien himself, with words in English and the Elvish language from the books. The ballet includes original choreography to a piano concerto by Dmitri Shostakovich. Both were arranged, staged, and directed by Cinballera's co-founders, sisters Tiffany and Rebekah Brannan. A fellowship of nine performers will bring a concise, artistic take on this story to life. Led by the Brannan sisters, the cast includes talented professional opera singers and ballet dancers who have performed around the world. The opera will be performed with live piano accompaniment. Cinballera stands for Cinema, Ballet, and Opera, the three inspirations behind this unique production company. "Lady of the Ring" wasn't based on the popular Peter Jackson films, though. It was inspired by the classic novels, which this program encapsulates like a movie from the Golden Era of Hollywood. The show will last around an hour and a half. Allow us to transport you to Middle Earth for one enchanted evening!

Noted as America’s “Black Wall Street,” the neighborhood predated Oklahoma’s statehood and, as the most prosperous African American district in the nation with thriving Black-owned businesses, was seen as a promised land for Black Americans. The decades-long prosperity came to a sudden halt in the summer of 1921 when white Oklahomans attacked Greenwood’s businesses and residents, wiping out the community in a deadly, three-day massacre.

The Museum of Photographic Arts (MOPA) is hosting its 13th annual Human Rights Watch Film Festival from Feb. 2 to 9. The Human Rights Watch Film Festival will feature critically acclaimed films on topics including child care and education, environmental protection, gender equity, trans and Indigenous rights, women’s rights and more. But that is about to change. The feminist Afghan pop icon Aryana Sayeed takes two female singers under her wing and with each episode they defy the odds – winning the hearts and minds of the public, and pushing the national conversation on women’s rights along the way. When the Taliban suddenly take power – these brave artists must decide whether to stay and fight for their rights or to escape abroad to safety. When Vanessa Guillen, another Latina service member, disappears and is then murdered, Karina steps forward to share her story, creating the #IAmVanessaGuillen hashtag. Hundreds of service members chime in, exposing the cycle of abuse occurring on military bases and demanding justice. In a country that kills an incredibly high number of transgender, Indigenous and environmentalist youth of any country , Uýra leads a rising movement while fostering unity and providing inspiration for the LGBTQIA+ and environmental movements in the heart of the Amazon Forest.
