Whole Hog is a bluegrass band that performs timeless hits, eclectic selections from the roots of Americana music. Their sound blends traditional bluegrass repertoire with Irish, vintage jazz, yodeling, country, western swing, honky-tonk, original songwriting, and special requests. The band gets audiences on the dance floor, putting on entertaining shows at parties, festivals, and corporate events. Members’ personalities and comradery connect with audiences, while wowing them with instrumental mastery and lush vocal harmonies. This Ventura-based string band consists of Seth Andrey Oster on guitar, Keith Frankel on banjo, Charletta Erb on fiddle, and Corey Highberg on standup bass. Seth is a contest winning flatpicker, fingerpicker, singer, yodeler, and buckdancer. Trained in jazz and classical guitar at Cal State Northridge, the multi-instrumentalist has continued to nourish his passion for bluegrass, pre-war blues, and gypsy jazz. Keith found his true passion for music as a teenager when he discovered the five-string banjo. Before moving to California, he worked with a variety of Colorado-based string bands including the Swallow Hill House Band. In addition to performing, he has been a consummate educator and currently teaches at Boulevard Music in Culver City. Charletta is a California State Adult Division Fiddle Champion recognized for her lyrical waltzes and clear tone. She has a deep affection for Irish and old-time music. With her Rhonda Vincent-esque vocal quality, spunky stage presence, and soulful vocal harmonies, she has graced the stage at festivals including Parkfield, Great 48, South State 48, Good Old Fashioned, and Topanga Tailgate Jam. Corey sings and plays upright bass. He teaches, researches, composes, and performs music in a variety of styles. This is the central question in artworks made by Helen and Newton Harrison, starting with The Serpentine Lattice in 1993 and continuing to the present day with their research initiatives led by the Center for the Study of the Force Majeure at UC Santa Cruz. Their earlier work addresses forest clear-cutting, while the more recent work focuses on how forests are impacted by related public policy and climate change itself. Nubya Garcia isn’t an artist you can easily classify. Is it jazz? Sure, the London-born saxophonist, composer and bandleader grew up studying the genre under the noted pianist Nikki Yeoh at Camden Music. But it isn’t until you listen to albums like 2020’s Source and 2024’s Odyssey that you hear broader creativity shining through: It’s jazz, classical, dub, R&B and whatever else Garcia wants to convey. It all comes from a place of exploration and self-study, of wanting to do all the things across all disciplines while ignoring arbitrary boxes that don’t fit. Garcia’s sophomore album Odyssey, out in September 2024 via Concord Jazz, is a majestic feat on which she blends orchestral arrangements with R&B, jazz, broken beat and dub, resulting in a grand, nuanced record that feels airy and celestial without sacrificing the groove. Republicans want to add work requirements for Americans to get Medicaid. Is that a necessary step to fight "waste, fraud, and abuse" or a sneaky way of cutting the social safety net?

In this beginner-friendly course, students will learn slab building techniques to create their own vases using simple tools and techniques; no potter’s wheel required. Students will learn the differences between soft slab construction and stiff/hard slab construction to construct their own forms and patterns. The course will focus on three different vase shapes: simple cylinder, teardrop, or angular. Using the same slab building technique, students may also create small bud vases for singular flowers. Students will complete the course with a fully functional vase(s). While this is a beginner friendly course, more intermediate and advanced students may also join. Students will learn how to: wedge clay roll out slabs using a rolling pin and wooden guides compress slabs using a rubber rib and/or paddles strengthen clay in order to reduce air bubbles, cracks, and warping during the drying process use PVC pipes to create cylinder vases cut out shapes using patterns templates made of cardboard or cardstock attach slabs using the “score and slip” process, where joined seams are either visible or invisible decorate vases with ribbon tool or clay texture rollers soften rims of vases using ribs and chimoy clothes on banding wheel Materials: Please purchase a standard size wooden rolling pin and a beginners pottery tool kit. You do not need to purchase an extensive toolkit for this course, but please buy a kit which includes a metal rib, fettling knife, and scoring tool. Beginner kits are often very minimal but if you choose to continue pottery, the latter tools are incredibly helpful and you will likely need them later. If the metal rib, knife, and scoring tool are difficult to find, you can purchase a basic kit and buy these tools separately at Freeform Ceramics in National City, CA.
