Veterans Village of San Diego is holding its 35th annual Stand Down event this weekend. The event provides food and medical care, legal assistance, employment support, housing referrals and even haircuts to veterans and veteran families experiencing homelessness. But it is being overshadowed by several deaths at the organization's rehab center for veterans including one this week. Then, it’s been seven months since California required trash haulers to start picking up and composting food waste. But the city of San Diego is still far away from complying. And for our weekend arts preview we have chamber music, a new play from the people behind “The Laramie Project,” plus plenty of visual art and dance.

Mondays from 4 – 5:30 p.m. Ages 6-12 welcome! Lead instructor, Hayley Winick, collaborates with guest instructors to teach this month-long series full of hands-on, engaging crafts using STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math). The hands-on activities will allow your child to express themselves in a creative way, practice and build fine motor skills, eye-hand coordination and much more. This series is a wonderful introduction to a creative and nurturing learning environment. Projects encourage problem solving in creative and innovative ways, and include wood, textiles, clay, paper, and glass. Young students will make beautiful pieces to take home over the course of the series. All materials included. Students explore a variety of mediums to teach hand skills to children using safe, natural materials. Each project teaches craftsmanship, dexterity and material exploration. Just in time for the holidays, viral sensation and celebrated dog grooming artist Gabriel Feitosa will team up with Wildlife Expert and Co-Founder of Phantasticus Pictures, Forrest Galante, to give stray dogs fabulous makeovers and loving homes at San Diego Humane Society's El Cajon Campus. Nov. 29, 2022 4 p.m. – 6 p.m. Internationally known Feitosa made headlines as he went viral for positioning man’s best friends into incredible walking works of art. As an artist and advocate for safe and effective grooming practices, Feitosa now boasts over 1 million followers on TikTok and over 250,000 on Instagram. He has redefined the world of dog styling, sometimes even transforming pups into images of other animals, such as giraffes, panda bears and zebras. Wildlife Biologist and avid animal lover, Forrest Galante, will help to facilitate the event with a supportive onsite presence, engaging with attendees and addressing all questions. Anyone can attend to watch Feitosa and his team in action, and hopefully, walk away with a lovable new pet.

On August 12th from 5 - 8 p.m., SIP San Diego, a collective of urban wineries, meaderies and cideries, will be hosting their 5th annual SIP the City festival at Escondido City Hall. For $79 per person, attendees will have the opportunity to sample unlimited sips from all 14 members of the SIP San Diego non-profit in one place, as well as enjoy light bites from the newly opened California Poppy and live music in the dome venue at Escondido City Hall (201 N. Broadway, Escondido CA 92025).
