  • "Ripcord" By David Lindsay-Abaire A comedy of one-up-womanship Jan. 13 - Jan. 29, 2023 Thursday - Saturday @ 8 p.m., Sat-Sun Matinee @ 2 p.m. Directed by Kira Blaskovich It’s not every day you see a play based on two senior women in competition for sole access to the room of an assisted living facility. But that’s exactly what David Lindsay-Abaire, the Pulitzer Prize winning author of "Rabbit Hole," "Fuddy Meers," and "Good People," has put forth in the quirky comedy, "Ripcord." Full of hijinks and pranks, the fun doesn’t stop at the opposing personalities of Abby Binder and Marilyn Dunne. "Ripcord" pushes past the typical “Odd Couple” formula to present nuanced and interesting characters with the type of lived experiences that could only come from age. From sudoku to skydiving, the secrets among them will almost break these women while simultaneously solidifying their friendship. Coronado Playhouse on Facebook / Instagram
  • Veterans Village of San Diego is holding its 35th annual Stand Down event this weekend. The event provides food and medical care, legal assistance, employment support, housing referrals and even haircuts to veterans and veteran families experiencing homelessness. But it is being overshadowed by several deaths at the organization's rehab center for veterans including one this week. Then, it’s been seven months since California required trash haulers to start picking up and composting food waste. But the city of San Diego is still far away from complying. And for our weekend arts preview we have chamber music, a new play from the people behind “The Laramie Project,” plus plenty of visual art and dance.

  • Pop Smoke: A Veteran Art Exhibition is a survey of veteran artists who utilize bright colors, basic shapes, commonplace images, or repetitive means of production within their art making practice. Several early Pop Movement artists served in the armed forces during WWII and the Korean War, including Roy Lichtenstein, Jasper Johns, and Richard Artschwager. This exhibition is a nod to those early veteran pop artists as we turn our attention to veteran artists who continue to use similar moods. By exploring veteran art making practices in ways that are playful, tongue in cheek and ironic, we consider the many different forms and artistic tones that poignant artistic expression can take. We also examine the multitudes of the veteran artist identity: Who is a veteran artist? And what is veteran art? The exhibition's title is a military slang term referring to throwing smoke grenades as a means of cover or escape during battle. The term "pop smoke" is also common slang that means "to leave a place". This exhibition is developed in partnership with The Veterans Art Project (VETART) and the Mental Health Services Oversight and Accountability Commission (MHSOAC).
