On Wednesday, September 28, San Diego Mesa College will hold a reception for "In Lak’ech: Tu eres mi otro yo," featuring artworks by Maria de Los Angeles and Ryan Bonilla. The Reception will be held from 4-7 p.m., in the Mesa College Art Gallery (FA-103). "In Lak’ech: Tu eres me otro yo" (You are my other me) invokes a Mayan concept popularized by Chicano playwright Luis Valdez. This affirmation reflects a philosophy of caring and connecting with the human spirit of one another. This idea sets the tone for this two-person exhibit at the San Diego Mesa College Art Gallery to celebrate Latinx Heritage Month. Through evocative paintings, wearable dress sculptures and drawings, artist Maria de Los Angeles – a former Dreamer and community college student, who is now a Professor at Yale University - connects with America’s multiple selves: those of the immigrant, the refugee, the undocumented, the indigenous. She questions and breaks down racist stereotypes and tackles otherness and the concept of belonging. Sharing the space, Ryan Bonilla’s monotype prints and Polaroid installation titled “We are Misfits” are a celebration of alternative culture. Exhibition runs through October 13. A shelter program for homeless San Diegans dealing with inclement weather was activated Tuesday by the San Diego Housing Commission and the city of San Diego.

On Friday, November 4, Yiddishland CA is participating in La Jolla’s monthly art walk and will have a variety of artwork and Judaica available for purchase. Join us for drinks, snacks, entertainment, and the opportunity to see the wonderful, original artwork. This month’s art walk will feature Yiddishland’s First Anniversary celebration and surprise guests. Calling all budding young artists! EC Gallery is holding a Kids Art Contest Saturday, Sept 10 from 11:00am – 5:00pm. All kids from 5 – 12 are eligible to enter the contest. This is your opportunity to get in front of some amazing artists to hone your skills and see how you compare to the professionals. Participants will choose from three paintings they would like to emulate. The kid who most closely replicates the painting in their individual age group will receive a winner certificate as well as a wonderful Pop Dog art piece. There will also be an overall winner who will receive the grand prize of having their painting professionally framed and hung in the gallery for a full month. In addition, they will get a gift basket of art supplies worth $250. The artists' pieces to be emulated will be Gloria Lee, Michael Flohr, and Danny Ryan who will also be judging the contest. Cannupa Hanska Luger is a multidisciplinary artist and an enrolled member of the Three Affiliated Tribes of Fort Berthold (Mandan, Hidatsa, Arikara, Lakota and European descent). Through monumental installations and social collaboration, Luger activates speculative fiction and communicates stories about 21st Century Indigeneity, combining critical cultural analysis with dedication and respect for the diverse materials, environments, and communities he engages. He lectures and produces large-scale projects around the globe and his works are in many public collections. Luger is a recipient of a 2021 United States Artists Fellowship Award for Craft and was named a 2021 GRIST Fixer, he is a 2020 Creative Capital Fellow, a 2020 Smithsonian Artist Research Fellow, and the recipient of the Museum of Arts and Design’s 2018 inaugural Burke Prize, among others.
