WHO: Sangita Iyer is a biologist, National Geographic Explorer, multiple award-winning nature and wildlife filmmaker, former broadcast journalist and author of the 2022 Amazon bestseller "Gods in Shackles: What Elephants Can Teach Us About Empathy, Resilience and Freedom". She is also the Founder of Voice for Asian Elephants Society (VAES), a 501(c)(3) organization with a vision to protect endangered Asian elephants and their habitats in India, while also ensuring that native people and those living near the forest fringes have their basic needs met, so they will be inspired to coexist peacefully with these magnificent animals. Sangita recently produced a 26-part short docu-series about Asian elephants, funded by the National Geographic Society’s storytelling grant. She’s also the director and producer of the globally acclaimed epic documentary, Gods in Shackles, which was nominated at the United Nations General Assembly, and has garnered 13 international film festival awards. Sangita received the “Nari Shakthi Puraskaar” – Women Power Award – the highest award for women making a difference in India from the country’s President for her courage to expose the plight of captive elephants that are being exploited for profit behind the veil of culture and religion. WHAT: A fun evening of films, art, and delicious food to save Asian elephants! Sangita will be speak about the human/elephant conflict in India and screen two of her National Geographic short films about elephants as well as sign her best-selling book, Gods in Shackles. Amy Burkman will be doing a live art performance! There will be wine, appetizers, cupcakes and a live and silent auction. This is a fundraiser for Voice for Asian Elephants Society, founded by Sangita and endorsed by Dr. Jane Goodall. This week Loud Fridge Theatre Group kicks off its first full season with the San Diego premiere of former San Diegan Rachel Bublitz' "Ripped," about a campus sexual assault.

The La Jolla Art Association's upcoming exhibit will run from August 6 - October 1 and will feature approximately 50 pieces of art by six artists. The media featured includes acrylic, watercolor, oil, mixed media, digital art, and photography. From the KPBS weekend arts preview: Gesture, fashion and emotion were the first things I noticed in Lani Emanuel's exhibition at Oceanside Museum of Art. "Beside Herself" is a series of large figurative paintings that chronicle the formative years of a girl's life, and the swings from joy to grief to annoyance to awkwardness is so palpable. Emanuel paints with a minimal backdrop, so the focus is on the light and movement in the image. —Julia Dixon Evans, KPBS From the artist: "Beside Herself is a journey of personal exploration concerning a difficult childhood and adolescence. My paintings are all in some way autobiographical, but additionally, they embody comparisons between my personal and contemporary young women’s issues concerning identity development, emotionality, connection and communication, introspection, family dynamics, and female relationships. They address these issues through the specifics of contemporary young women’s body language, gestures, gaze, interaction, and clothing choices. My series of shoe paintings represent the playful style choices of young women. I portray these young women as individuals and place them in minimalistic interior environments or exterior non-environments. I show a specific quality and direction of light to emphasize the mood of each painting. My figurative paintings are painted in oil on canvas or linen and are primarily created using the Zorn limited palette. I occasionally include an object or signifier such as an orange power cord, partially opened double doors, a tin foil star wand, or chandelier print wallpaper to invite an open-ended interpretation for the viewer. I depict the young women in my figurative paintings life-sized in the hopes that they will command attention, versus being easily ignored." –Lani Emanuel Learn more about the exhibition here.
