From the KPBS weekend arts preview: Gesture, fashion and emotion were the first things I noticed in Lani Emanuel's exhibition at Oceanside Museum of Art. "Beside Herself" is a series of large figurative paintings that chronicle the formative years of a girl's life, and the swings from joy to grief to annoyance to awkwardness is so palpable. Emanuel paints with a minimal backdrop, so the focus is on the light and movement in the image. —Julia Dixon Evans, KPBS From the artist: "Beside Herself is a journey of personal exploration concerning a difficult childhood and adolescence. My paintings are all in some way autobiographical, but additionally, they embody comparisons between my personal and contemporary young women’s issues concerning identity development, emotionality, connection and communication, introspection, family dynamics, and female relationships. They address these issues through the specifics of contemporary young women’s body language, gestures, gaze, interaction, and clothing choices. My series of shoe paintings represent the playful style choices of young women. I portray these young women as individuals and place them in minimalistic interior environments or exterior non-environments. I show a specific quality and direction of light to emphasize the mood of each painting. My figurative paintings are painted in oil on canvas or linen and are primarily created using the Zorn limited palette. I occasionally include an object or signifier such as an orange power cord, partially opened double doors, a tin foil star wand, or chandelier print wallpaper to invite an open-ended interpretation for the viewer. The two-act play, written by Synthia L. Hardy and directed by Bryan Rasmussen combines storytelling and song to capture the essence of Billie Holiday’s music and life. In the first act, Holiday prepares for her show while answering the questions of two unseen reporters. Hardy as Holiday entwines her biography and explanations of the inspiration for and history of her music with performances of her popular numbers. Musician Woody Woods joins Hardy on stage as Holiday’s pianist accompanying her through hits including the haunting “Strange Fruit,” as well as “God Bless the Child,” “Good Morning Heartache,” and “Lover Man.” One of the greatest jazz and blues performers of all time, Holiday unfolds the truth about her turbulent life – combating racism, navigating abusive relationships, and enduring multiple arrests. In the second act, Hardy embodies Lady Day, (a nickname given to Holiday by musician Lester Young), in a concert of her hits that includes “’Ain’t Nobody’s Business If I Do” and “Willow, Weep for Me.” Through a voice reminiscent of Holiday’s with its raspy edge and incorporation of crying and wailing, Hardy portrays the iconic artist as simultaneously classy and tough, vulnerable and versatile, hopeful at times and hopeless at others, but most of all, full of heart and sympathy. Raising awareness and acknowledgement of the first peacetime all-black regiments in the regular U.S. Army after the end of the Civil War is the goal of a local cavalry troop and nonprofit organization. On July 28, 1866, Congress authorized six regiments of Negro slaves and free men, which consisted of the 9th and 10th Cavalry Regiments, and the 38th, 39th, 40th and 41st Infantry Regiments. These men became known as, “Buffalo Soldiers.” The rich and historical legacy and accomplishments of these valiant soldiers will be on full display at the 20th Anniversary Celebration of the San Diego Chapter Buffalo Soldiers on June 30, 2023, at the Celebration Hall of the Vi and Joe Jacob Center in Lincoln Park. The public is invited to join the anniversary luncheon, enjoy exhibits of artifacts, and celebrate their contributions at this noteworthy event. An informative program is planned and special keynote speaker, Brigadier General Antoinette R. San Diego Mesa College Art Gallery hosts this exhibition of pictorial and sculptural investigations on color, light and texture, featuring recent artworks by San Diego-based artists Christian Garcia-Olivo, Kaori Fukuyama and Melissa Walter. The advent of Modernism inspired artists to explore abstraction and in the 20th century painters were motivated to pursue explorations with a variety of media in order to capture both the material and the immaterial. Jackson Pollock’s drip paintings, physically vigorous in form and action, can be contrasted with the ethereal rigor of perceptual light works by the Southern California Light and Space movement of the 60s and 70s; and to the interest on phenomenology of some conceptual art. The three artists whose works are assembled together in "The Weight of Color", "The Shape of Light", delve into these legacies; there’s a push and pull of the picture plane, a celebration of both organic and synthetic pigments while surface and materials are manipulated in novel and unexpected ways. These artists manipulate paint and pigments in novel and unexpected ways: Shaped canvases vibrate in contrasting colors; paint becomes solid like skin and thread; pulverized lava dust shaped into words.
